Organization Information
Redwood City Renegades (RCR) is an Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) affiliated non-profit 501(c)3 basketball organization dedicated to the development of amateur student-athletes. RCR was established in 2004 after seeing a need for a competitive basketball program in the Redwood City, Peninsula area that preferred the benefit of the student-athletes rather than any monetary gain.
Mission Statement
Our organization’s mission is to conduct a basketball program that provides a higher level of training and competition with a strong emphasis on positive character development both on the basketball court and in the classroom. This mission is also intended to impress a development of life skills to include: Character, Hard work, Attitude, and Perseverance. Together these qualities equal a lifetime of success.
Team Information
The organization presently has three girls teams a 4th/5th, 7th, and 8th grade. We conduct try-outs 3 times a year while our team competes year round. The team plays in highly competitive tournaments and carries 10-12 players. We will compete in AAU sanctioned tournaments throughout the year. Tournaments are generally on weekends and schedules will be determined. The majority of tournaments take place in spring and summer. Practices are held a minimum of twice a week during season.
Presently the team has participants from Castro Valley, San Ramon, San Jose, Fremont, Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Mountain View, Redwood City and other parts of the Bay Area.
Coach and Staff Bios’
Steven Diaz is the Director and a head coach. He founded the Redwood City Renegades with the mentality of establishing a non-profit basketball club that preferred the benefit of the student-athletes rather than any monetary gain. He has been employed with Redwood City Police Department for 7 years and was previously employed with the University of California Police Department. He presently is a Varsity Assistant coach with Ygnacio Valley High School. He was named the 2005 P.A.L. coach of the year, has coached competitive basketball at the local and national for approximately 8 years and has an education in Information Technology. His motto is “Do your best to remain competitive, but maintain your integrity”.
Erin Niemeyer is the Assistant Director for the organization and a Head Coach. She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise and Sports Science with an emphasis in Sport Management. She additionally has a Masters in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. She has coached basketball at Carlmont High School and College of San Mateo along with several competitive youth leagues. She has played basketball all her life and is presently the Recreation Coordinator for the Redwood City Police Activities League and the Art David Athletic League.
Lara Canders is a coaching assistant for the organization. She is a 5'6" Senior at Ygnacio Valley High School and is playing her 4th year for the Varsity team at shooting guard. She was the 4th highest scorer in the BVAL her Junior year. She has played basketball since 2nd grade and has played with elite AAU teams.
Lauren Mansfield is a coaching assistant for the organization. She is 5'11" Sophmore at Ygnacio Valley High School and is playing her 2nd year for the Varsity team as a post player. She has played basketball since the 4th grade.
All coaches/staff are Positive Coaching Alliance certified.
