Taking a Lead Off of First

Presented byThe Baseball Academy

Stand a step and a dive from first base so that you can get back safely. Take your lead when the pitcher has the ball and is taking signs from the catcher. Shuffle to the right to take your lead, and avoid crossing your feet so you can dive back to the base on a pick-off attempt. Stand ready on the balls of your feet.

"When you are leading off of first base, be prepared to run in either direction."

Step 1

  • Stand with your foot on the base until you are sure the pitcher has the ball
  • Size up the game situation (number of outs, the count, number of players on base)
  • Consider where the defensive players are positioned

Step 2

  • Take two walking steps and two shuffle steps as the pitcher reads signs from the catcher
  • Keep your lead roughly 12 feet from first base
  • Vary your lead distance based on your speed and the pick-off move of the pitcher

Step 3

  • Balance your weight evenly on both feet
  • Do not lean toward first or second base
  • Hold your arms comfortably in front of you
  • Be ready to move quickly to the left or right
  • Keep your eyes on the pitcher to be vigilant to a pick-off move

Step 4

  • Take two more shuffle steps toward second as the pitcher throws the ball to the plate
  • Keep your eyes on the action
  • Be attentive and ready to move back to first or dart to second
