2008 Firecracker College Showcase - Runners Up in the 16u Silver Bracket
June 29, 2008
Our 16u Lady Lions team played an outstanding weekend of softball in Carlisle, PA for the PONY Firecracker College Showcase. Going 3-3 in 6 games of pool play on Friday and Saturday the Lions gave up only 15 runs while scoring 29 and were seeded 28th out of 69 teams, placing them in the Silver Championship Bracket for single elimination play on Sunday. All 3 of our losses (by 1-2, 2-3, and 4-6 scores) were hard fought, down to the wire games.
In our 1st game on Sunday, we jumped to an early lead against the Richmond Freeze who came back to tie it up in the top of the 7th. The girls fought back and scored a run on an RBI, 2 out, base hit to win 6-5.
For our 2nd game vs. the Maryland Flames, we were down 5 to 1, when the bats came alive scoring 5 runs in the 6th inning and held on for a 6-5 win.
In the semi-final round, the Lions again found themselves in a 4 to 1 hole to the RBI Rebels when they strung together several big hits and combined with aggressive base running took the lead on 4 runs scored in the 4th inning and eventually winning 6-5.
The Championship game vs. the Tradition South from Wallingford, Connecticut was hard fought by both teams, start to finish. With the scored tied 1 to 1 in the 3rd, the Tradition scored 2 runs and tacked on a 4th run in 5th inning. The Lions were hitting the ball, but left 8 runners on base throughout the game and could not get them across home plate. Although the Lions lost 4-1, they came away with 2nd place, a bid to the PONY Nationals in Vienna Ohio and a never quit attitude. Excellent job Ladies!
