    2005 Season

WOW - Shrine has huge day at Oakland County Championships!
Wow! That's all I can say. It was a slow day of waiting to swim, but the girls were lightning fast when it was their turn to get in the pool.

200 Medley Relay - Ally, Haley, Bridget, and Katie swam a team record time of 2:05.66, finishing 25th of 34 teams and qualifying for consideration to swim at the MISCA Invitational at Eastern Michigan University on Saturday, 10/22.

100 Fly - Bridget swam a personal best and State Championship Qualifying time of 1:05.07. She will also be swimming this event at the MISCA meet on 10/22, and like the rest of the team has the potential to go a lot faster by the end of the season.

200 Free Relay - Bridget, Christy, Chelsea and Katie again bested the team best time from last year's league meet with a 1:54.35. This relay has also qualified for consideration to swim at the MISCA meet on 10/22.

400 Free Relay - Bridget, Christy, Chelsea, and Katie went what has to be a team record or close - 4:19.83.

    Great Job Shrine Knights!

Shrine surprises Lady Oak Relay Field to take 3rd overall
On Saturday, our team had a great showing at the Lady Oaks Relay Meet. We finished in THIRD place behind Berkley and Avondale, topping the combined Royal Oak team, Bishop Foley, and Hazel Park. To put this in perspective, last year we finished dead last in this meet. Again, the accomplishments are almost too many to list:

    1. Our rookies won both 'Rookie' relays: 200 Medley (Gola, Iott, Obudzinski, Dixon) and the 200 Free (Dixon, Niemczura, Iott, Obudzinski).
    2. We won the 200 Fly relay (Moore, Gola, Finn, Obudzinski)
    3. Rebecca Reid chose to dive for her first time at this meet and did awesome. She scored third place even though her relay was only one, and helped the team to our overall third place finish. Oh yeah, she also swam three other relays.
    4. The food was great. (Thanks to Heidi for arranging and to everyone for pitching in)

    Shrine defeats Hazel Park 97-74
Highlights of this meet are almost too many to list, but here's a start:

    1. Taylor Miskelly swam in her first swimming competition ever.
    2. Allison Shatz won two events - 200 IM and 100 Back
    3. The all Rookie Relay team of Iott, Gola, Obudzinski and Dixon won the 200 Medley and 400 Free Relay.
    4. Katie Obudzinski won the 100 Fly
    5. Christy Gola won the 100 Free
    6. Liz Niemczura swam a great 100 Free (I'm guessing her first 100 Free in competition) and lived to tell about it.
    7. Hannah Posen stepped up and volunteered to swim the 500 Freestyle scoring 2 varsity points for the team.

All in all a great contest. I'm especially proud of the girl's sportsmanship. In this meet they instituted a new rule, on their own, of staying in the water until the last competitor has finished swimming and shaking the hands of the swimmers in the lanes adjacent to them. I couldn't have been more proud of them.

    2005 Practice Schedule

    11/11 - League Meet
    11/12 - League Meet
    11/17 - State Meet
    11/18 - State Meet

We have a great group of 8th graders coming to the High School next year, and all signs are that we will be deeper than last year's squad. Please look at the Calendar for summer team events.

    2004 Season News

Catholic League Meet Just around the corner
The 2004 Catholic League meet is on Saturday, November 13th. Prelims start at 9:00am, finals are at 2:00pm. The psyche sheets are available online at:

    http://www.geocities.com/roswimming/psyche.htm

This lists what our girls are swimming and where they are seeded going into the meet. It is very important that we have your support in the morning, as the only way we can score points is to make it back for the finals at night.

Shrine closes out season with a win at Hazel Park and a State Qualifying time!!
Shrine closed out the regular season with a convincing win over neighboring Hazel Park High School. Many of the girls achieved personal best times including a 200 IM State Qualifying time by Colleen Moore.

Other personal bests included - Kathryn della Porta - 7:15 (500 Free)
    Shannon Finn - 1:30 (100 Fly)

The team celebrated the victory and the regular season completion with a pizza party at Como's in Ferndale thanks to Maureen Carey.

Shrine topples cross-town rival, Bishop Foley
Shrine rose to the occassion without four team members from the JAMD to beat Bishop Foley 91-79. Shrine touched the wall first in every event, although they conceded full points in the 400 Freestyle relay after a quick start earned them a disqualification.

    Highlights of the meet:

    Double event winners - Colleen Moore (100 & 200 Free), Bridget Moore (500 Free & 100 Back), Haley Orr (200 IM & 100 Breast)

Other winners - Emily Hengstebeck (50 Free), Christy Gola (100 Fly)

    Lifetime bests - Brynn Snyder (100 Breast - 1:36.92)

SHS-JAMD girls fight Regina to the very end.
The lady knights showed again that they are a much improved and deeper team than the same time last year in an 83-93 loss to Harper Woods Regina. Swimmers of note:

Maria Mitchell swam her first event, the 50 free, and did so 9 seconds faster than I predicted.

Brynn Snyder - After some concentrated instruction from my wife, Amy, she lowered her 100 breast time by 14 seconds from the Lamphere meet to 1:39.74.

Emily Hengstebeck came back from a knee injury and dropped a 30.7 second 50 free on us. Welcome back, Henks!

Christy Gola dropped 3 seconds in the 100 back to go 1:18.72.

Allison Shatz needed only another 10 yards and she would have chased down a fading Regina swimmer for first in the 500.

The 200 Freestyle relay of C. Moore, Kinjorski, Orr, and Liz Wolff qualified for the Oakland County Championships.

Tough loss to Marian can't mask a great meet for the Knights!!
Shrine-JAMD girls squared off against a team twice their size on Tuesday, 9/14, and took a good beating. But...in the course of the meet, much was exposed about the heart and character of the Knights. Highlights of the meet included:

~Colleen Moore's 26.42 in the 50 free qualified her for Counties and the MISCA meet, and is only .13 seconds off the State Championship qualifying time.

~Bridget Moore dropped 2 seconds in the 200 IM and 4 seconds in the 100 fly from last weeks Lamphere meet.

~Liz Wolff put together a fantastic 50 and 100 Freestyle, and best of all looked about six feet tall in the water.

~Shrine qualified another relay, the 400 Freestyle, for the Oakland County Championships - October 1st at Lake Orion High School.

Knights open up with a win!!
Shrine-JAMD defeated Lamphere High School 101-69 to start off the 2004 season with a bang. The meet was full of lifetime bests as Shrine placed first in all but two events. Some highlights of the meet were:

~The 200 Medley relay of Christy Gola, Haley Orr, Bridget Moore, and Colleen Moore qualified for the Oakland County Championship meet.

~Colleen Moore's time in the 50 free qualified her for the Oakland County meet and the MISCA meet.

~Bridget Moore won both the 200 IM and the 100 Fly

~Allison Shatz won both the 200 Free and the 100 Back

    Congratulations, Knights!

EMU Invitational added to Knight's Meet Schedule - 9/26/2004
SHS-JAMD Knight swimmers have been invited to the second OI2 Invitational at Eastern Michigan University. This meet was started last year to give teams that do not have their own pools, and often swim out of pools without blocks a chance to swim in a world class facility. Focus will be on making cuts to the County meet, MISCA meet, and MHSAA State Championships.

This is a great opportunity for all our girls as the format is open and each girl can swim up to 4 events. There is no limitation of entries per team, per event, so everyone will get a chance to swim their best events.

    Co-Captains are Named!
Joining returning seniors, Colleen Moore and Emily Sarber, Allison Shatz has been named the third co-captain on the SHS-JAMD squad. I am very excited to have her join our great group of upperclass leaders. Along with Coach Sarah, they are the reason last year's team was such a success. Allison's leadership in and out of the pool will be invaluable to us this year, and she will be instrumental in our efforts to unite one team from two campuses.

Please congratulate the team captains when you see them!

    Off and Running
The kick-off practice was a success!! We had 16 of what I hope will be a 25-30 girl team show up for the first practice. All the girls were in good spirits despite the cold water and the corny video presentation. Out of 16, two girls claimed to have no previous competitive experience, but I have my doubts as all executed the Long-Axis drills like they had been born in the water.

    Next challenge...AM workout.

    Practice Schedule is Complete

    Informational Meeting was a Success!!
June 1, 2004 Sarah and I would like to thank all of you were able to make it out to the informational meeting. We have many things to be excited about for next year, and I'd like to highlight a few:

    1. Sarah's success last year in creating a fun team environment was evident even in this first meeting. Our Senior and Junior members appear committed to continuing this trend in this year's season.

    2. For the 2004 season, swimmers from the Jewish Academy and Shrine High have been officially unified into one team. That means our members from the Jewish Academy will be competing with us this year and we are stronger for that.

    3. We have a handful of girls from the Shrine Academy who are interested in swimming next year, some with previous competitive experience.

    4. We have an outstanding group of parents who are already focused to make this team a success. Where would we be without you?

As the website reads, we have 97 days until our first competition. If you can, get in the pool this summer as much as possible. If you need help identifying opportunities, please let me know. The local USS and YMCA teams and contacts are posted in "Handouts" section.

    Thank you.

    Coach Smith

    2004-2005 Schedule is shaping up
Mr. Donaldson has been hard at work finalizing the 2004/2005 schedule. Some highlights are the Royal Oak Relay meet on Sept. 11, and the MISCA meet on October 23rd. Please go to the Calendar, or the Meet Schedule for the full season schedule. The times are not listed yet, they will be updated as soon as possible.

PLEASE PLAN AHEAD....I noticed that the MISCA meet lands on one of the scheduled ACT Test dates. There may be other conflicts that I am unaware of.
