Cody Courtney Passes in Tragic Accident
The CBN Slateworks Jr. Stars would like to express their sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Cody Courtney. Cody played his rookie seson with the Stars in 2006-2007. Last season work commitments kept Cody from playing but he was expected back this year to play with the Stars.
In his rookie season Cody scored 8 goals, added 9 assists for 17 points in 26 games. In the playoffs that year Cody scored three goals and added 7 assists for 10 points in 9 games.
General manager Brian Hurley said he was saddened and shocked when he heard the news of Cody's passing. Cody was a great young man when he played for the Stars, very quite and hard working. He got along really well with his team mates and was well liked in the dressing room. mr. Hurley said he would like to pass on his deepest condolences to Cody's mom Corina.
Stars to Hold Open Tryouts
THE CBN SLATEWORKS JR. STARS WILL BE HOLDING OPEN TRYOUTS AT THE CAPITAL HYUNDAI ARENA STARTING ON WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 10, 2008 AT 5:00 PM.
THE STARS WILL HOLD ADDITIONAL OPEN TRYOUTS AT THE CAPITAL HYUNDAI ARENA ON WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 17 AND WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 24 AT 5:00 PM BOTH DAYS.
THE STARS WILL ALSO BE HOLDING OPEN TRYOUTS AT THE BAY ARENA ON FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 12 AND FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 19 AT 7:00 PM.
THERE WILL BE A CHARGE OF $5.00 PER SESSION.
Stars Holding Fundraiser
THE CBN SLATEWORKS JR. STARS ARE CONDUCTING A FUNDRAISER FOR THE 2009 DON JOHNSON CUP. THE STARS ARE SELLING TICKETS ON TWO TICKETS TO SEE ELTON JOHN PLUS ONE NIGHT AT THE DELTA HOTEL. TICKETS ARE $2.00 EACH OR 3 FOR $5.00 AND CAN BE PURCHASED FROM MEMBERS OF THE EXECUTIVE. TEAM MEMBERS WILL ALSO HAVE TICKETS FOR SALE.
Stars Holding Golf Tournamnet
THE CBN SLATEWORKS JR. STARS WILL BE HOLDING A GOLF TOURNAMENT AT PITCHER’S POND GOLF COURSE ON THURSDAY AUGUST 28, 2008 STARTING AT 8:00 AM.
REGISTRATION IS $200 FOR A TEAM OF FOUR OR $50 PER INDIVIDUAL – THIS INCLUDES GREENS FEES, CARTS, HAMBURGER AND HOTDOG AND TWO MOLSON PRODUCTS. FOR FURTHER INFORMATION PLEASE CONTACT CALVIN ADAMS AT 786-3168; ED RUSSELL AT 786-7381 OR BRIAN HURLEY AT 786-1566.

It's Official - Stars to Host 2009 Don Johnson Cup
It's Official, Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador announced on June 26, 2008 that the Conception Bay North Jr. Stars had been awarded the right to host the 2009 Don Johnson Cup, Atlantic Junior 'B' Championships from April 14 - April 19, 2009 at the Bay Arena.
Organizing committee chairperson Brian Hurley said "everyone is estatic with being awarded such a prestigious event as the Don Johnson. It is certainly the high point for the Stars since they joined the Co-operators St. John's Junior Hockey League nine years ago."
Planning for the championships is well underway and an organizing committee has been put in place. Members of the committee include Ed Neil, Glen Littlejohn, Norm Hill, Kevin Hurley, Brian Ryan, Fred Earle, Joyce Morgan, Ed Fradsham and Brian Hurley.
The Don Johnson is the highest level of Jr. B hockey in Atlantic Canada and will provide local hockey fans will an opportunity to see the best Jr. B hockey available in the Atlantic Provinces.
"Hosting these championships will require lots of volunteers and I am sure the people of the CBN area are up to the challenge" Hurley said.
Russell To Coach Stars
General Manager Brian Hurley announced today that Ed Russell will be the Stars new coach for the upcoming season. Hurley said "he is extremely pleased to have a coach with the experience and character that Eddie has."
Ed has an Intermediate Level Coaching Certification with past experience at the Midget and Bantam All Star levels of the Bay Arena Minor Hockey Association and at the Bantam AAA and Midget AA level with the Cape Breton County Minor Hockey Association, Nova Scotia.
Ed played 3 years of university hockey with Cape Breton University Capers and St. Francis Xavier X-Men hockey teams of the Atlantic University Sport Association - AUAA Hockey. During this time Ed was as All-Canadian Academic Award winner while at Cape Breton University.
Ed is also a former scoring champion and MVP of St. John's Junior Hockey League and a former scoring champion and MVP of Avalon West Senior Hockey League. He holds a Level VI Officials certificate with the Hockey Canada Officiating Program (HCOP)and is a HCOP certified instructor and supervisor. Ed has on ice officiating experience with the QMJHL, Herder Finals, Don Johnson Cup Finals, Avalon West Senior League, Cooperator's St. John's Junior League and 4A Highschool Championships.
Team President Kevin Hurley welcomed Ed on behalf of the Board of Directors and wished him all the best in the coming season.
