On SAA Night, the HS huddles prior to their match against Radnor as the SAA team looks on

SAA Wrestling Night was held on Jan 17 at the high school.  It was a great night and all the young kids from the youth program were on hand to watch the high school defeat Radnor by a score of 36-24.

The Springfield Athletic Association has sponsored the youth wrestling club for over 30 years.  The program is designed to introduce the young boys of Springfield to the exciting sport of wrestling.  The objectives of the program are to teach wrestling skills while developing a love of the sport through fun and competition.  The focus is not simply on winning but rather on building skills and confidence while learning good sportsmanship and work ethic.

The SAA has had great coaching over the years including current High School coaches Dave Pecunia and Brian Romesburg.  Dave led the SAA program for 13 years and is now in his 8th year as coach of the high school.  Brian, who wrestled for the SAA, SHS, & Penn State, was head coach of the program for 3 years and is now in his 4th year with the high school.  Dave & Brian now get to coach their SAA kids for a second time around at the high school along with Steve Mazureck, who is in his 18th year coaching the Cougars.  These three coaches are highly dedicated individuals and recently achieved a great milestone by winning their 100th match on December 29 against Peddie in Maryland at the McDonogh Duals.

This year’s SAA team is lead by Ron Dortone who is in his third year as head coach. Ronnie’s doing a great job with the kids and gets a lot of help from coaches Dave Hoffner, Joe Venit, Todd Gallagher, Pat Johnson, Keith Bennett, Bob Thomas and three former SAA and Springfield HS wrestlers: Justin Gronlie, Sean Reed, and Ryan Loro.

Working with the coaches are directors Mike Gildea who is in the 8th year of over seeing the program and co-directors Joe and Becky Scerinio along with Jason Boyer.  These folks spend a tremondous amount of time to ensure a first class program for the kids.

This years SAA team has over 50 members. Many of these kids have hopes of going on to wrestle up at the high school level. This year’s high school team has 15 former SAA wrestlers on it and the Varsity currenlty has 12 out of 14 spots occupied by SAA wrestlers.   The SAA team also has some blood relationships with the high school including: Nicky Dortone, brother of Danny Dortone; Jeffry Kinter, brother of AJ Kinter; Collin Braconeer, cousin of Steve Schol; and Joe & Pat Dougherty, cousin of Pat Leahan.

The SAA team has a lot of talent across the board from the youngest novice wrestlers to our most experienced boys. Durring the SAA night a few of the wrestlers were recognized for their accomplishments last year in the 2007 Middle Atlantic Wrestling Tournament which spans 12 states.  Placing in Districts and advancing to Regional’s were: Chris Sciarrino, Jack Horan, Luke Charmella, Dennis Charmella, and Vince Barbieri, Placing in Regional’s and advancing to Nationals was AJ Cutrufello who placed 8th in the Nationals.

The SAA sends thanks to the Grappler Club and to the High School for making this night possible. It’s a great inspiration for the young kids to be exposed to High School wrestling.  See more pictures in Photo Albums.
