We'd like to welcome all teams and visitors to the 8th Annual St George American Legion Summer Classic Baseball Tournament for 2022!  This should be another stellar tournament, with 8 teams joining us from states across the Utah, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming.  Each year our tournament boasts some top level competition and we expect this to be another great year.  

The tournament kicks of Wednesday night at 7:30 pm with a feature game between Jackson, WY and St George Sentinels at Dixie State University and Utah Rangers vs. Dixie at Dixie High School.  Games continue daily at 9:30 AM, 6:00 PM and 8:30 PM at Dixie State and Pine View High School.

The 2022 summer American Legion Baseball season has returned!  The St George Sentinels return with more than 4000 teams across the U.S. in pursuit of a coveted spot in the annual American Legion World Series. But first, they will compete against American Legion teams across the great state of Utah to vie for the state crown and the hopes of advancing to the western regionals in Fairfield, CA. Winners of the state title and 2nd place in the western regional in 2017, state runner-up 4 times since 2014, the Sentinels have a proud history of great players who have formed a great tradition of hard work and excellence during the hot summer months of St George. We look forward to another great year, building on the strong tradition formed by players from the past as we reach for new heights with our current group of high-achieving players from 2022.

The St George Sentinels concluded their stellar season in the championship game of the American Legion Western Regionals, finishing with the 2nd place trophy after falling twice to the Nevada state champion Henderson squad.  The 2nd place finish was the highest finish ever for a Utah team since the beginning of American Legion baseball in 1927.  Many thanks to the support of family, St George legion post 90, and many supporters across the great state of Utah throughout the journey.  Coverage of the games can again be found on www.stgeorgeutah.com/news/archive.  Thank you to Andy Griffin for his great support and stories supporting the team and American Legion baseball throughout the season.

Many team records were broken throughout the year and can be found under the All-Time leaders tab for this website.  Notably, Nick Horsley was awarded one of two Utah Player of the Year awards from the Utah American Legion Baseball organization and will receive a $2500 scholarship.  Also, Tobie Swenson received the teams' Most Inspirational Award for his tireless efforts on the mound and at the plate, while attending all team practices, fundraisers, and games through the long summer season.

Several players from the team are moving on to play college baseball this coming year, including the following:  Alex Flemetakis at Dixie State, Jagun Leavitt at Dixie State, Nick Horsley at Benedictine University at Mesa AZ, Ryke Erickson at College of Southern Idaho, and Payton Higgins at Treasure Valley.  Thanks for the help and support of Mike Gargano and Southwest Baseball Academy for the support and assistance in players preparing for and finding places to play at the next level.

We are already looking forward to next season ....

On Saturday, July 29th, the St George Sentinels accomplished the incredible task of winning the 2017 American Legion state title after losing its first game and coming back through the losers bracket.  After falling to North Cache on the opening day of the tournament, the Sentinels rallied together to win 6 straight games and take home the first place trophy.  Defeating Pleasant Grove 6-5 and 4-2 at Gates Field in Kearns, St George brought home its first state crown since 2003.  There were multiple heroes over the 4-day tournament, including outstanding pitching and hitting from multiple players throughout the squad.  On championship day, Blake Milne and Jagun Leavitt took center stage and each pitched 7 complete innings to lead the team to victory.  Further details throughout the week can be found on www.stgeorgeutah.com/news that provided excellent coverage throughout the week.  

The Sentinels now move on to the Western Regionals in Denver, CO and will face New Mexico on August 2nd at 3:30 pm.

The St George Sentinels finished as the #1 Seed from the Utah Southern League on Saturday, July 22nd, by defeating Pleasant Grove 5-0.  The Sentinels are 20-10 headed into the state tournament and will face the North Cache Titans at 1:30 PM at Gates Field in Kearns on Wednesday, July 26th.

Strong defense, outstanding pitching, and timely execution on offense have been key for this team of late in winning its last 7 games.  With a tough field of competition ahead, St George hopes to continue perform at a high level this coming week in pursuit of the state crown against Utah's best legion teams.  Photo above was taken by Robert Hoppie of St George News on 6-17-17.

We'd like to thank all of the incredible teams that attended our St George Summer Classic 2017.  There was some great baseball played and we appreciate everyone's efforts to make our tournament a huge success.   Hopefully all enjoyed Bruce Hurst Ballpark at Dixie State and their hospitality, as well as the competition from team's throughout the tournament.

The St George Sentinels finished another successful season with the second place trophy at the Utah State American Legion Championships.  After falling on the second day of the tourney to Grantsville, the Sentinels fought their way through the one-loss bracket by defeating Syracuse, Layton, Grantsville to reach the championship game.  Unfortunately, St George fell in the championship game to the Cache Valley Bees to finish with 2nd place for the second time in the last three years.  The Sentinels finished the year with a 20-13-1 record.

Ryke Erickson was awarded top defensive player of the state tournament, as well as team MVP for the season.

Several team records were broken this year, including Dawson Staheli finishing with 6 triples and Alec Flemetakis with an OBP of .623.  Other fantastic players joined our All-Time Leaders Board (check it out at the bottom of the upper left-hand tabs).

St George pulled off a miracle Monday night, storming back with 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th to win its first game of the state tournament 9-8 over Layton.  After falling behind by 4 runs in the top of the first inning, the Sentinels fought an uphill battle the entire way. Each time the Sentinels would put runs on the board, Layton would respond with runs of their own. However, winning the coin toss to play as home team ended up being pivotal for St George. Down 8-5 going into the bottom of the 7th, and after a quick first out, Logan Campbell and Michael Lacy both reached base on singles. Alec Flemetakis then walked, Kory Taigen singled to score Campbell, then Ryke Erickson and Anthony Cornwall both walked to force home Lacy and Flemetakis and bring the score even at 8-8. After a first pitch strike, Kash Walker laid down a perfect bunt on a suicide squeeze play to score Kory Taigen and complete the comeback.

Stand-outs for the game at the plate included Kory Taigen, who was 3-5 (including a double that bounced over the wall), Ryke Erickson, who was 3-3 with 2 RBI, and Michael Lacy who was 3-4. Makai Maclellan picked up the win on the mound after relieving in the 7th inning. The Sentinels move forward in the winners bracket to play Grantsville on Tuesday at 2 pm.

The Sentinels wrapped up a successful regular season this week and look forward to the next step: the Utah State Legion Championship tourney in Layton next week. Finishing with an official record of 16-11-1 overall and 10-2 in league play, the Sentinels now have their sights set on finishing strong while vying for the elusive state crown.

The St George Sentinels kick off a new summer season starting June 7th! Representing the American Legion St George Post 90, the Sentinels are proud to represent the Veterans of southern Utah as we compete for a state crown.

The St George Sentinels finished off a successful season Thursday night, placing 3rd at the State Legion Championship Tournament.  After winning its first game on Monday, St George lost to the Blacksmith Trappers (Mountain Crest) on Tuesday of the week and fell into the Losers Bracket.  They subsequently won the next two games, beating Fremont 5-1 and Bear River 16-2 to advance to the play-in game for the championship.  However, after building a 4-2 lead in the first inning and carrying a 5-4 lead into the top of the ninth, the Sentinels faltered in the final inning as they gave up 4 runs and ultimately lost the contest 8-6.  They did have the tying at the plate with a runner on third base in the bottom of the ninth and just 1 out, but fell short after consecutive long fly balls to the outfield were caught.

The Sentinels ended the 2015 legion season with a 22-10 record.  Highlights on the season included winning the Logan Summer Tournament in June, qualifying for championship day in the Boulder Invitation Tournament of 32 teams, and sweeping Price 4-0 to qualify for the state championship tournament. 

Team leaders for the season included:  Kash Walker, who led the team with a .487 batting average, .737 slugging pctg, 25 RBI, 5 triples and 17 stolen bases (setting 4 new season records for the Sentinels); Logan Lafemina, who hit .392 with 36 runs scored (new team record), 12 stolen bases and an ERA of 2.37; Tyler Johnston, who hit .386 with 28 runs scored, 20 stolen bases and team-leading ERA of 1.70 (ERA and SBs are new records); Chris Petrosie, who was 5-1 with a 2.27 ERA and only 8 BB in 37 innings pitched; and Carter Milne, who was also 5-1 with a 2.92 ERA and team-leading 38 innings pitched.

The Sentinels will have a closing ceremony/BBQ at the St George Legion Hall on Wednesday, August 26th, at 6:00 pm for all players and their families. Awards will be presented and the team recognized for a great season.  Many thanks to St George Legion Post 90 for their sponsorship, donations of time and money, and their support with flag ceremonies, photos and attendance at our games.  We are already looking forward to next season!

St George finished a great weekend of baseball on Saturday at the Boulder National Invitational Tournament.  Featuring 32 teams from largely the western U.S., St George played four games against: Salina, KS; Albuquerque, NM;  Denver, CO; and Boulder, CO, going 3-1 and qualifying for the championship rounds for the tournament.  However, due to rains earlier in the week that canceled play on Wednesday, championship play was pushed to Sunday.  With many of the St George players and coaches who do not play on Sundays due to their religious convictions, the Sentinels declined to play in the championship rounds and instead returned home content with having proved itself one of the top 4 teams in the tournament.

On Thursday, Austin Ruseler led the way for the Sentinels, pitching a shut-out that ended in an 8-0 mercy run rule finish in the fifth inning.  Ruseler gave up only 3 hits and struck out 3, with only 1 BB to notch the win.  Trevor Berry was solid at the plate, going 2-3 with 2 RBI, and Kash Walker had a triple (his third for the season).

On Friday, the Sentinels enjoyed another pitching gem, this time with Chris Petrosie throwing a shut-out as the Sentinels downed the Denver Mustangs 8-0 in 5 innings.  The Sentinels led 7-0 after a 6 run second inning, highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Josh Howard.  Great performances included Logan Lafemina, who was 2-3 at the plate and scored 3 times, Kash Walker, who was 3-3 with a double, and Josh Howard, who went 2-3 with 2 doubles and 4 RBI.  St George also had a solid defensive effort, highlighted by 3 double-plays for the game, each initiated by Tyler Johnston.

On Saturday morning, the St George Sentinels played a very good team from Salina, KS and defeated them 5-2.  Carter Milne pitched another great game, lowering his ERA to 1.25 on the season as he pitched a complete game and gave up only 1 earned run.  Kash Walker was 2-4 in the game with a double, Josh Howard was 2-4 with 2 RBI and Brenr Nelson was 2-4. 

In the second Saturday game, having already clinched a top 4 spot already in the tournament, the Sentinels fell to the hometown Boulder team 6-2.  Despite collecting 8 hits and putting runners in scoring position in 5 of 7 innings of play, the Sentinels were unable to drive in runs and could only muster 2 runs.  Logan Lafemina took the loss on the mound, giving up 4 earned runs in 5 innings pitched (coming from two 2-run homeruns).  Kash Walker was 2-4 at the plate for the game. 

The St George Sentinels finished their stellar baseball year on Friday, falling to Helper in the final game to walk away with the 2nd Place Trophy for the State of Utah 2014.  After beating Helper 8-0 on Thursday night to force a winner-take-all championship game, the Sentinels ran out of gas in the final.

Fossat, the Helper pitcher who was voted MVP for the tournament after pitching 4 games for Helper, pitched a brilliant 1-hitter against the Sentinels in a complete game shut-out.   Although St George did have some hard hit balls, it seemed each ball was hit right at the Helper fielders and they made the plays.  Conversely, after going through the previous 7 games of the tourney with only 3 errors, the Sentinels had 5 costly errors in the game to seal their fate.

Nevertheless, St George enjoyed a marvelous summer season to finish up 25-8-1 and second to only the repeat champion Helper team.   It was a summer of tremendous dedication and growth and great accomplishment.  For the state tournament, Josh Howard was voted Offensive MVP by the American Legion for his outstanding display at the plate, hitting 3 homeruns, 4 doubles, and driving in 12 runs for the Sentinels.
