Carpenter Cup Team Slated To Begin Play Monday, June 9th
June 5, 2008
Sun Valley will be well represented as the Delaware County Carpenter Cup team gets set to begin play in the tournament on Monday, June 9th, against Chester County at 12:30 p.m. at the University of Pennsylvania. The team, comprised of all-stars from the Del-Val and Central League schools, along with Garnet Valley, has seven participants from Sun Valley. Juniors Sam Farnell and Tom Brennan will join senior teammates Joe Maloney, Mike Pappas, Ed Toy, Pat Sheridan, and Bob Westbrook as the team looks to rebound from two straight first round losses in 2006 and 2007. Its first test is a tough one as Chester County is the defending champion.
Sun Valley Well-Represented on All Del-Val Team
June 5, 2008
Prior to playoff action beginning, the Del-Val coaches got together to vote on this year's all-league team. With Sun Valley's unblemished 14-0 record, it was rightfully rewarded with many players on the all-league squad. Garnering first-team honors were first baseman Ed Toy, second-baseman Sam Farnell, outfielder Pat Sheridan, catcher Joe Maloney, and pitchers Mike Pappas and Tom Brennan. Securing second-team honors were pitcher Pat Clark and outfielder Bob Westbrook. Honorable mention honors went to shortstop Dom Venuti and third baseman Jarad Carney. Pat Sheridan walked away with Player of the Year honors after a unanimous vote was conducted. Congratulations to all players on great individual seasons!
Sun Valley's Season Ends
June 2, 2008
Sun Valley suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss at the hands of Fleetwood in the first round of state playoff action Monday at West Chester University. A 1-out triple for Fleetwood in the third inning followed by a passed ball accounted for the lone run of the ballgame as the Vanguards saw their 21-game winning streak snapped. It was the first time Sun Valley had been shut out since the PIAA state final in June of 2006.
Spoiled in the loss was another fine performance from Mike Pappas on the mound. The senior lefty, entering the game with a 10-0 career record, was the hard-luck loser for the first time in his career. Pappas surrendered just 3 hits, 2 of the infield variety, in the loss. Tom Brennan came in to relieve Pappas with 1 out in the seventh as he exited the field for the last time.
The Vanguards struggled offensively for the first time all season. A double by Andrew Machemer with 2 outs in the second was the first scoring threat of the day for Sun Valley. A leadoff triple by Sam Farnell in the fourth was the second chance for the Vanguards to get on the board. However, he was left stranded. Sun Valley would again threaten in the sixth as back-to-back singles by Bob Westbrook and Farnell (2 for 2 with a walk) with 1-out put a man in scoring position for the third time. However, the runners were again left stranded. A 1-2-3 seventh for Sun Valley would, unfortunately, mean the end of the season for Sun Valley.
The 2008 version of the Vanguards brought a ton of excitement to its coaching staff, parents, the school district, and the community. With a bullseye on their backs all season, Sun Valley would capture its 7th straight (and final) Del-Val league championship with an undefeated 14-0 record. A pair of dramatic walk-off hits would move Sun Valley from the first round of the district playoffs against Springfield into the semifinals against Great Valley, and from the semifinals into the finals, securing the school's fourth state playoff berth in their history (3rd in 4 years). The Vanguards' relentless efforts would again pay off in the district final with Sun Valley battling back from 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 defecits against Marple Newtown, ultimately ending in the school's 2nd ever District I championship. An early state playoff exit was not what Sun Valley had anticipated, but unfortunately, brought an end to a school-record run of 21 consecutive victories.
The 2008 seniors (Pat Clark, Jack Croft, Tim Flannery, Joe Maloney, Mike Pappas, TJ Robinson, Pat Sheridan, Ed Toy, Dom Venuti, and Bob Westbrook) carried on the tradition of excellence established by recent past classes and again vaulted Sun Valley to the tops of the baseball rankings in Delaware County and beyond. While playing varying parts in team successes at the 9th grade, JV, and varsity levels, the class of 2008 can be nothing but proud of the accomplishments of the program in their years, 2005-2008. Four Del-Val championships, two District One championships, three appearances in the District One Finals, three appearances in the state playoffs, and an almost unbelievable combined record in 4 years at the varsity level of 77-15-1 are all accomplishments for which these seniors can be proud.
On behalf of the coaching staff, many thanks to all the players for their dedication to Sun Valley Baseball. You have made us all proud to be a part of the Vanguard baseball program. Best of luck to the seniors. To those returning, we look forward to working with you on the diamond in the years to come.

District One Champions!!!
May 29, 2008
For the second time in school history, the Sun Valley baseball team captured the PIAA District One championship on Thursday with a 7-5 victory over Marple Newtown. While both teams were assured state playoff berths by virtue of their victories in the semifinal round on Tuesday, the Vanguards and Tigers were both in search of the District One Championship that had eluded them in consecutive runs to the PIAA state finals - for the Vanguards in 2006 and for Marple Newtown in 2007.
Pat Clark got the start on the mound and surrendered 1 earned run in 2 plus innings of work. Pat Sheridan came into a 1-1 ball game and was a settling force for Sun Valley as he surrendered just a lone run in the fourth and a lone run in the seventh. Sheridan gave way to Tom Brennan with a 7-4 lead in the seventh. Brennan struck out the first man he faced. A double was followed by another Brennan strike out. A seeing-eye single up the middle plated the 5th run of the game for the Tigers before Brennan induced a long fly out to center with the tying run on base to end the ball game.
Sun Valley's offense finally woke up today, outhitting the Tigers 11 to 9. Tom Brennan got the scoring started for Sun Valley with a base hit to lead off the 2nd. Andrew Machemer, who was 3 for 3 on the day, singled to move Brennan to third, and an RBI groundout by Jarad Carney knotted the game at 1-1. With Marple scoring a run in the top of the third, Bob Westbrook got things rolling for Sun Valey in the third. A bunt single by Westbrook was followed by a single by Sam Farnell. With runners on 2nd and 3rd, a sac fly by Ed Toy knotted the game again at 2-2. The Tigers would forge ahead again in the 4th with a lone run to make it 3-2 Marple Newtown. However, it was in the 5th inning when the Vanguards offense really got on track. Joe Maloney led off the inning with a solo shot to left to tie the score, 3-3. Bob Westbrook walked before Sam Farnell doubled to the wall in center. Another Ed Toy sac fly plated the 4th run and gave Sun Valley its first lead of the contest, 4-3. A Pat Sheridan ground-out and subsequent error plated the 5th run for the Vanguards. Andrew Machemer came through in the cluth again with an RBI single to plate the 6th run, and Max O'Malley plated another with a pinch single to center to make the score 7-3. The 5th inning typified what has been a team approach all year long for Sun Valley as several substitutions were made and all contributed. In all, 18 players were used in the contest for Sun Valley. Machemer had 3 hits on the day, while Farnell, Westbrook, and Maloney each had 2 to spearhead the Vanguard attack from the top of the lineup.
Congratulations to the Sun Valley players on a school-record 21st consecutive victory and a District One Championship!
A special thank you also goes out to all the fans who came out to support the Vanguards today. What a great crowd and great atmosphere for baseball!!!
Next up for Sun Valley is a PIAA state playoff first round game on Monday at a location and time yet to be announced. Stay tuned for details.

Another Playoff Game, Another Walk-Off Hit...On To The State Tournament
May 27, 2008
Some iffy weather in the morning and a questionable starting time did nothing to slow down the 2008 version of the Vanguards as another walkoff hit propelled Sun Valley into the district final and the state tournament in dramatic fashion with a 3-2 victory over Great Valley.
Solid pitching, timely defense, and clutch hitting were again at the heart of Tuesday's win. Ed Toy came through with a clutch starting performance on the mound, throwing 4 strong innings, and getting himself out of a bases-loaded, 3-0 count jam with a strikeout in the 4th. Toy also provided offsensive punch, plating Joe Maloney with the game's lone run heading into the 7th with an RBI single in the 4th inning. Mike Pappas came on to pitch 2 1/3 solid innings of relief, striking out 5 and yielding just one base hit, before giving way to Tom Brennan. With the game tied 1-1, Brennan struck out the first man he faced before a ground-rule double gave the Patriots the lead, 2-1. A clutch strikeout with men on 2nd and 3rd ended the Great Valley half of the 7th, setting the stage for another dramatic bottom half of the 7th for Sun Valley.
The Vanguards wasted no time in mounting a threat as Sam Farnell led off the bottom half with a tough at-bat and ultimately a hard-hit single up the middle. Chris Nelson came in to run for Farnell. Ed Toy followed with a bloop single to center and was then also replaced by pinch-runner Ryan Howe. Pat Sheridan followed with a walk to load the bases and set the stage for Tom Brennan. After working a 3-1 count, Brennan took a monstrous cut at a 3-1 pitch, just missing it and fouling it straight back. There was no doubt about the next pitch though as Brennan hit a rocket through the hole at short. Nelson scored to tie the score and Ryan Howe put an end to things, sliding in safely at home just ahead of the throw as the Vanguards stormed the field.
The Vanguards will take on Marple Newtown, 10-5 winners over Unionville, in Thursday's district final. The last two PIAA state finalists both have qualified for the state tournament, slated to begin on Monday. While the game time for Thursday's district final is 4:00, the location has yet to be determined.
With the win, the Vanguards set a school record for consecutive victories with their 20th in a row.
A special thanks to all who found a way to get to the game, a strange 1:00 start, as the Vanguard faithful were instrumental in providing much-needed support in the dramatic win.
Sheridan's Dramatic Walk-Off Homer Pushes Sun Valley into Round 2
May 22, 2008
For 6 innings, the Sun Valley Vanguards were seemingly in control with a 4-0 lead over Springfield heading into the top of the 7th in their first round playoff contest. 35 minutes, 3 pitchers, 6 hits, 2 walks, a hit batter, and 5 runs later, Sun Valley found itself trailing a resilient Springfield team 5-4 heading into the home half of the seventh. Joe Maloney reached base safely with a walk with 2 outs and the Vanguards season on the line, when in stepped Pat Sheridan. A 1-1 pitch was driven deeply to right and over the fence as the Vanguards notched the dramatic, come-from-behind victory via the walk-off home run route. Sheridan was a one-man wrecking crew for Sun Valley as his 2-RBI single in the 3rd broke a scoreless tie. A double in the fifth by Sheridan eventually led to another run for the Vanguards. On the mound for Sun Valley, Mike Pappas did not figure in the decision, but was very good on the mound, throwing 4 1/3 strong scoreless innings in allowing just 3 hits.
Next up for Sun Valley is a district one semifinal contest against Great Valley. Game times and locations are not yet availalbe for distribution.

Sun Valley's Hot Bats Spell Victory In Win Over Downingtown West
May 15, 2008
Sun Valley's bats heated up yesterday and erased some uncharacteristic defensive lapses for the home team in a 12-2, 5 inning victory over Downingtown West. Sam Farnell had quite a day at the plate in leading the Vanguards offensive charge. The junior started his day with an RBI single in the first, added a 2-run home run in the 2nd, and followed that up with a 2-run home run in the fourth. Ed Toy followed Farnell up with a 3 for 3 performance of his own, including a solo shot to end the ball game with one out in the fifth. Dom Venuti added two hits and scored two runs and Tom Brennan plated three with a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning to further help the Vanguards' cause. On the mound, Mike Pappas picked up the win with 4 innings of 1-hit baseball. Tom Brennan pitched a scoreless 5th before Sun Valley would end the contest in the home half of the fifth. Next up for Sun Valley is a home contest against Boyertown on Friday. Game time is 4:00.

Sun Valley Ends Del-Val League Season in Style
May 13, 2008
Sun Valley played its last ever Del-Val League contest on Tuesday as it moves to play in the extremely competitive Ches-Mont League next season. With the league title already wrapped up, Sun Valley exited in style with a convincing 14-4, 6-inning victory over league rival Chichester. Ed Toy picked up the win on the mound with 4 innings of 1-hit baseball. Offensively for the Vanguards, Sam Farnell, Joe Maloney, and Dom Venuti each collected two hits. Maloney added 3 RBIs, while Pat Sheridan and Tom Brennan each added two. The game featured solid defense from the Sun Valley as three twin-killings were turned in three different ways...a 1-2-3 in the first, a 5-4-3 in the third, and a 6-4-3 in the sixth. Next up for Sun Valley is a non-league tilt with Downingtown West at home on Thursday. Game time is set for 3:45 p.m.
Later on Thursday evening, the playoff picture will be clearer for Sun Valley as the District One playoff committee will meet to decide seedings for next week's playoffs.
Downingtown West Game Moved To Thursday
May 9, 2008
Wednesday's (5/12) contest against Downingtown West has been moved from Wednesday to Thursday (5/13) due to a league game make-up for the Whippets. It is still a 3:45 p.m. home game, and is the last regular season contest for the Vanguards.
Sun Valley Captures Seventh Straight League Title
May 8, 2008
Thursday's 16-0 victory over Chester clinched the outright Del-Val League title for Sun Valley as one league contest is yet to be played (Chichester) and the Vanguards have separated themselves from Interboro by 3 full games. It is the 7th straight title for the Vanguards and 8th in the last 9 years. Thursday's contest featured strong pitching by Pat Sheridan (3 IP) and Cody Lewis (1 IP) in the shutout win. The offense was a balanced attack as 8 different players collected hits, 10 different players had RBIs, and 11 different players scored runs for Sun Valley. Dom Venuti, Max O'Malley, Ed Toy, and Sheridan each had multi-hit days for the Vanguards. Next up is a non-league contest at Malvern Prep. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
Vanguards Clinch Tie For Del-Val League Title
May 6, 2008
By virtue of its 12-1 victory over Academy Park Tuesday, Sun Valley has clinched a tie for its seventh straight Del-Val League title. Ed Toy (5 IP) provided a solid start on the mound, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and striking out 7, while Mike Kelly finished the job with a 1-2-3 6th in relief. Sun Valley opened the scoring with 4 runs in the second and 4 runs in the third. A lone run by Academy Park in the 5th would be all the scoring they could muster as Sun Valley would plate 4 more in the sixth to finish things off. Bob Westbrook, Sam Farnell, and Joe Maloney each collected two hits, while Westbrook, Maloney, Tom Brennan, and Tim Flannery each plated two runs on the day in a balanced Sun Valley offensive attack. Next up is an away contest at Chester on Thursday. A win in Thursday's contest would clinch an outright league title for Sun Valley.
Sun Valley Defeats Glen Mills
May 1, 2008
Sun Valley defeated Glen Mills by a score of 10-4 Thursday in a contest where the Vanguards were certainly not at their best. Several Glen Mills mistakes in the field enabled the Vanguards to score 6 unearned runs in the victory. Mike Pappas (4 2/3 IP) picked up the win on the mound to improve to 9-0 in his career and Pat Clark picked up the save, holding the Battlin' Bulls hitless over the last 2 1/3 innings. Offensively for Sun Valley, Sam Farnell and Jarad Carney each had two hits, while Carney and Tim Flannery scored twice and Farnell crossed the plate 3 times. Up next for Sun Valley in the coming week is two league contests at Academy Park on Tuesday (3:30 start) and Chester (3:30 start) on Thursday, along with a non-league contest at Malvern Prep (1:00) on Saturday. Sun Valley can clinch at least a tie for the Del-Val league title with a victory on Tuesday.
Vanguards Dispose of Patriots
April 30, 2008
Sun Valley used a 13-hit attack to make quick work of Penn Wood on Wednesday with a 15-0, 3-inning victory. After a long bus ride, Sun Valley hitters came out swinging with 14 of the first 16 hitters reaching base and scoring. Pat Clark (2 IP) and Jarad Carney (1 IP) shared the pitching duties, allowing a lone Penn Wood infield hit in the first. Offensively, Bob Westbrook, Pat Sheridan, and Carney all homered while 9 different Vanguards had hits and 10 different Vanguards crossed the plate. Next up for Sun Valley is a road contest Thursday at Glen Mills. Game time is 3:30.
Sun Valley Ends 3-game Week With Victory Over Harriton
April 24, 2008
In their third contest in four days, Sun Valley again came out on top with a 5-3 victory over Harriton on Thursday. The Vanguards would never trail in the contest as they led 1-0 after 1 inning, 3-1 after 2, and 5-1 after 4 innings. Two runs in their half of the 5th inning by Harriton to make the score 5-3, as it turns out, was as close as Harriton would get. In another "staff" day on the mound, starter Pat Sheridan (3 innings) picked up the win with relief help by Mike Pappas (2 IP) and Joe Maloney (2 IP). Offensively, Sun Valley made the most of its 6 hits on the day with some timely hitting. Sam Farnell had 2 hits and 3 RBIs, and Sheridan helped his own cause with a sacrifice fly in the first and a clutch 2-out, 2-strike, 2 RBI single in the 4th inning. Next up for Sun Valley is a non-league contest at Penn Wood on Tuesday (4/29). Game time is set for 3:30.
Sun Valley Upends Bucs As Second Half of League Play Begins
April 22, 2008
Sun Valley began the second half of Del-Val play with a 6-1 victory over Interboro on Tuesday. An uncharacteristic six walks by the pitching staff and 2 errors by the Sun Valley defense masked the suprising combined no-hitter for Sun Valley as Ed Toy (3 IP), Mike Kelly (1 IP), and Mike Pappas (3 IP) combined for the no-hit victory on the mound. While Sun Valley pounded the ball all day, several baserunning miscues by the Vanguards kept the game from ever really breaking open. Offensively for Sun Valley, Bob Westbrook was 3 for 3 with 2 runs scored, Joe Maloney was 2 for 3 with a solo home run and 3 RBIs, and Pat Sheridan continued his hot streak at the plate with a 3 for 4 performance. While the win provided separation for Sun Valley atop the Del-Val standings, another big game looms Thursday as Harriton makes the trip to Sun Valley. As the only other AAA team in the Del-Val, the Harriton game carries extra meaning for Sun Valley's postseason hopes. Game time is set for 3:45.
Vanguards Defeat Garnet Valley
April 21, 2008
Sun Valley picked up its first win in several years over local rival and non-league foe Garnet Valley Monday, defeating the Jaguards by a score of 6-4. Pat Clark picked up the win on the mound, tossing the first four innings and surrending just one unearned run before giving way to Tom Brennan (6 Ks) for another lengthy relief appearance as Brennan would pick up the three-inning save. Pat Sheridan led the charge offensively for Sun Valley with a solo home run in the 2nd and an RBI double in the sixth. Ed Toy chipped in with two RBIs, Bob Westbrook singled and doubled, and Jack Croft and Dom Venuti each executed two sacrifice bunts in the well-played contest. Next up for Sun Valley is a road matchup on Tuesday at Interboro in a game that could separate the Vanguards from the pack in the Del-Val by two games as the second half of league play commences. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
Sun Valley Wins Del-Val Pitcher's Duel
April 17, 2008
Sun Valley finished the first half of the Del-Val season at 7-0 after winning a close contest at Chichester Thursday. 3 runs in the Sun Valley half of the second and 2 runs in the Chichester half of the third accounted for all the scoring on the day. Mike Pappas (4 IP) picked up the win and Tom Brennan (3 IP) came in to shut down the door and pick up the save in a well-played contest. Offensively, Pat Sheridan came through with the big blow with a 2-run triple in the 2nd after a hussle play by Ed Toy to lead off the inning saw him end up on 2nd base following a botched pop-up in the infield. A Joe Maloney walk put runners at first and second with no outs prior to Sheridan's triple. Dom Venuti followed 2 batters later with what turned out to be the game-winning RBI on a suicide squeeze. As it turned out, that was all the offense the Vanguards would need. Next up is a huge week for Sun Valley as their three game week includes a non-league matchup with neighboring Garnet Valley at home Monday (3:45 p.m.), a league game against Interboro away on Tuesday (3:30 p.m.), and a home matchup with Harriton on Thursday (3:45 p.m.).
Sun Valley Defeats Chester
April 15, 2008
Sun Valley moved to 6-0 in Del-Val play and 8-1 overall with a 10-0, 5 inning victory over Chester Tuesday. Pat Sheridan held the Clippers hitless on the mound, going 5 innings and striking out 8. Two double plays and two runners caught stealing turned any potential threats by Chester into outs for the home squad. Offensively for Sun Valley, Ed Toy was 2 for 2 with 2 RBIs, Bob Westbrook collected two hits and scored twice, and Sheridan helped his own cause with a single, sac fly, and two RBIs. Next up for Sun Valley is a big Del-Val League game at Chichester Thursday. The contest will conclude the first half of league play for the Vanguards.
Vanguards Win Seventh Straight
April 10, 2008
Sun Valley picked up its seventh straight victory on Thursday with a 12-2 Del-Val League win over Academy Park. The Knights got on the board first with a single run in their half of the first inning before Sun Valley was able to counter with 2 runs in the home half of the first to take the lead. From that point on it was all Sun Valley as they scored another run in the second and seven more in the third to break the game open. An RBI single by TJ Robinson in the sixth with two on and no one out ended the contest. Tom Brennan picked up the win on the mound with four strong innings before giving way to Pat Clark to finish things up. The total team effort on the offensive side for Sun Valley featured hits by 10 different players, runs scored by eleven different players, and RBIs collected by nine different players. Next week's action sees Sun Valley rounding out the first half of the Del-Val League schedule wtih a home contest against Chester on Tuesday and an away game at Chichester on Thursday.
Sun Valley Wins In Come-From-Behind Fashion
April 9, 2008
A single run in the 2nd inning got Sun Valley off on the right foot. However, 4 runs in the third and 1 in the fourth by Haverford meant Sun Valley was on the wrong end of a 5-1 score against Haverford High in a non-league contest played Wednesday. Mike Kelly made his first varsity appearance a memorable one on the mound as he came in to settle things down for Sun Valley. Three runs in their half of the fourth for the Vanguards made things much tighter with Sun Valley still trailing 5-4. A solo home run off the bat of Sam Farnell knotted the score at 5 heading into the sixth. Some two-out magic by Jarad Carney pushed the Vanguards ahead with an RBI single and Sam Farnell stepped in again to double in a much-needed insurance run. Kelly started the 7th, but two batters later with runners on 2nd and 3rd, Pat Clark was called in from the pen to shut things down and he did just that. Three ground balls later, Clark and the Vanguards escaped with a 7-6 win. Farnell, Ed Toy, and Dom Venuti each had two hits on the day. Next up for Sun Valley is a Del-Val contest against Academy Park on Thursday. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m.
Sun Valley Beats Battlin' Bulls
April 8, 2008
Sun Valley broke open a tight, 1-0 contest with 5 runs in their half of the 5th inning and an insurance run in the sixth in a Del-Val league contest against Glen Mills Tuesday. In the 7-1 win, Bob Westbrook led the offense with 3 hits and Jarad Carney and Ed Toy each had two RBIs in support of winning pitcher Toy. Toy's complete game featured 11 strikeouts without a walk as he surrendered just a single run in closing out the 7th inning. Next up for Sun Valley is a non-league contest home against Haverford High School. Game time is set for 3:45.
9th Grade Schedule Updated
April 6, 2008
Two more games against Interboro have been added to the 9th grade schedule and the updated schedule is located on the left under "2008 schedules." For those wondering, a lack of 9th grade teams in the area is the reason for the small number of games. Many schools with 9th grade programs seem to be facing a similar problem. Games may be added yet.
Sun Valley Wins Non-League Contest
April 4, 2008
Sun Valley sprinted to a 9-0 lead and hung on for a 9-7 non-league win at The Haverford School on Friday. Sam Farnell paced the offense with a 3-run homerun to left-center field in the 2nd inning. Tom Brennan was 2 for 3 with a solo homerun and 2 runs scored and Joe Maloney went 3 for 3 with a double and RBI in the contest. Pat Clark started and was strong on the mound in picking up the win, while Brennan provided solid relief to pick up the save. Another busy week for Sun Valley next week features two Del-Val League games against Glen Mills (Tuesday) and Academy Park (Thursday) sandwiched around a non-league contest vs. Haverford High (Wednesday) in a make-up contest from spring break. All are home contests for Sun Valley.
Penn Wood Downed By Sun Valley
April 3, 2008
Sun Valley defeated Penn Wood by a score of 16-1 on Thursday in Del-Val league action. Sam Farnell put an end to the contest with a 3-run homerun with no outs in the Vanguards' half of the fourth inning. Pat Sheridan struck out 9 in 4 innings of work, surrending one unearned run. Farnell, Joe Maloney, and Tom Brennan each collected 4 RBIs during the contest. Next up for Sun Valley is a non-league contest at The Haverford School on Friday at 3:45 p.m.

Owen Patrick weighed in at 7 lbs, 13 ounces, and was 19 3/4 inches long. Vanguards Escape With Victory Over Harriton
April 2, 2008
Sun Valley eeked out a 4-3 victory over Harriton on Wednesday. The Vanguards jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the top of the first before two Sun Valley miscues in the field enabled Harriton to tie the game at 2 in their half of the third. A sacrifice fly by Harriton in their half of the fifth made it a 3-2 game. In the seventh, Joe Maloney led off with a double, but was followed by two Sun Valley strikeouts. A pop up that should have been caught, aggressive baserunning, and a couple of uncharacteristic defensive lapses by Harriton turned what would have been a 3-2 loss for Sun Valley into a 4-3 lead and victory. Mike Pappas picked up with the win on the mound with 9 strikeouts, Bob Westbrook doubled, and Ed Toy tripled in two in the first in the victory. Next up for Sun Valley is a league game at home against Penn Wood Thursday and a non-league contest against The Haverford School on Friday.

Vanguards Fall to Penncrest In First Contest
March 24, 2008
The 2008 version of the Vanguards opened their season with a 5-3 setback at the hands of the Penncrest Lions Monday. The Vanguards started the scoring with single runs in the 2nd and 4th innings for a 2-0 lead. However, that lead would quickly vanish as the Lions plated 3 in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead. Two insurance runs in the 6th for Penncrest sealed the deal as the Vanguards could only muster a single run in the last inning. Eight different players collected hits in the loss for Sun Valley. Pat Sheridan (sac fly in the 2nd) and Dom Venuti (double in the seventh) collected the team's lone RBIs. Sun Valley jumps into Del-Val League play with a home contest on Thursday against Interboro. Game time is set for 3:45.
