The turning point for freshman right-hander Willie Beard came in the fourth inning when he faced one of the state's power hitters with his team trailing by a run. Like virtually every other pitcher who has faced EB's Chris Affinito, Beard could have chosen to pitch around the burly power hitter. Instead, he went right at Affinito and wound up striking him out. Beard said winning that confrontation gave him the confidence to finish strong.
