Practice Tips
The outside hook (180° turn) "The outside hook is a simple and effective way of changing direction with the ball." 1. The ball should be on the right hand side of the body before attempting the turn. 2. Keep low to the ground by bending the knees, this will give you good balance. 3. Your plant foot (left) should be slightly in front of the ball. 4. Hook the ball with the outside of your right foot. 5. Try not to cut the ball to far, keep it close to the body to maintain possession of the ball. 6. Use your left foot to accelerate away.
Basic Cut (45° to 90° attacking move) ”Is the fundamental attacking move in soccer.” 1. Push ball away with the outside of one foot (right foot) 2. Place plant foot (left foot) slightly away from the ball 3. Cut the ball with the instep of the right foot. As the cut is made, pivot on your plant foot (left foot). The cut should clear the body. 4. Take the ball pass the defender. May require a second cut with the other foot.
Sole of the foot turn (180° turn) ”An effective way to keep your body between the ball and the defender while moving in the opposite direction.” 1. Ball is slightly in front of your body. Plant foot (left) firmly. Do not jump. 2. Use the front sole (the cleats beneath the toe) to strongly pull the ball past your body. 3. Pivot, and take the ball with the instep of the left foot. The ball should stay in front of you the entire time.
Scissors Cut (45° attacking move) ”The scissors move is used to bypass an opponent by faking to go one way then go the other." 1. With the ball run at the defender. 2. Fake to go right by stepping over the ball with the right foot and dropping the right shoulder. 3. When faking to the right, make sure the right knee is bent. 4. Very quickly use the outside of the left foot to change the direction to the left. 5. Use the right foot to accelerate away.
The inside hook (180° turn) "The inside hook is a simple and effective way of turning with the ball." 1. The ball should be on the left hand side of the body before attempting the turn. 2. Hook the ball with the inside of your right foot. 5. Try not to cut the ball to far, keep it close to the body to maintain possession of the ball. 6. Use your right foot to accelerate away.
Pull Back "An effective way at high speed to stop the ball and go the other way." 1. Use the sole of the foot to pull the ball behind you, as you make a small hop or skip. 2. Turn the opposite way, and take the ball 180° away from the original direction.(If you use the right foot to pull the ball, then turn to the left.)
Step-over move (45° attacking move)
- Just before you step over the ball fake an outside foot pass or forward dribble with the outside of the foot, this will make the turn more effective.
