BLUES SWEEP ROADRUNNERS FOR 2-0 START
The 2007 version of the Jersey Blues started off doing what back to back World Series participant teams of 2006 and 2005 could not do. On Saturday the Blues swept rival Del-Tech 3-1 and 3-2 giving them a 2-0 start for the first time in three years.
Del-Tech one of the top teams in Region XIX fell to the Blues behind strong pitching from the entire Brookdale staff.
In game one Lex Wolfe started and pitched three solid innings. Wolfe did not yield a run over those three innings. Jed Refuss entered the game in the fourth and kept the game scoreless into the sixth until Del-Tech struck first with a solo wind blown home run to left center giving them the lead 1-0. In the Blues last at bat needing a run to tie the Blues did just that with Paddy Mattera scoring from first on a Ed Gallante double down the left field line. With two out and a pinch runner on third Jordan Marsh hit a slow roller to third and beat out the infield hit and the Blues took the lead 2-1. One error later the Blues added another insurance run. In the bottom of the inning Refuss allowed two runners and gave way to closer Cory Hawes. With his new submarine style of pitching Cory came in and made easy work of the Roadrunner hitters and saved the game for the Blues.
In game two Brookdale used 6 pitchers to shut down the Del-Tech hitters and defeated them by a score of 3-2. Del-Tech had two out and runners on first and second with two out against pitcher Joe Behan. The Roadrunners best hitter laced a ball to the glove side of third baseman Melvin Perez as he started the game ending 5-4-3 double play. The big hit in the game for the Blues came from a two out two rbi single from Ryan Smyth.
The Jersey Blues next game will be in West Palm Beach, Florida for the start of their 14 game road trip. You can follow all the action right here during their spring trip.
