Thunder JV & Varsity Remain Unbeaten, Take Two From Seahawks
Atwater - The Thunder played host to the visiting Ceres Seahawks in a very important trio of division contests. The Varsity Thunder battled for the 2nd straight week and was able to come out on top with a 24-20 victory. After a scoreless 1st quarter which saw the Thunder (4-0) put the ball on the turf, The Seahawks (2-2) took a 6-0 lead on a TD run. Ceres clinged to the lead for most of the 2nd quarter but the Thunder put together a nice drive and hit paydirt from 8-yards out on a Quintin Levesque TD run. Gabe Barreto's PAT kick gave the Thunder an 8-6 halftime lead. The Seahawks struck again in the 3rd quarter on the heels of another TD run and took a 14-8 lead. The lead would be short lived as Buhach struck back on the ensuing possession as Levesque plunged into the endzone from 2-yards out for the score. Barreto's kick gave Buhach a 16-14 lead, which the Thunder held through the middle of the 4th quarter. The Thunder defense forced the Seahawks to punt on the next possession and Levesque struck again, this time scampering from 36-yards out for the TD. Barreto's kick gave buhach a 24-14 cushion. The Seahawks would not go lightly scoring late in the 4th quarter to pull to 24-20. Ceres forced the Thunder to turn the ball over on downs with just under 2 minutes to play and were driving inside the Thunder 25-yard line but Buhach's defense held and forced the Seahawks to turn the ball over on downs. Buhach then took a knee to ice the win. "Our defense came up with some big stops when we needed to and that helped alot. The PAT kicks were also huge and made the difference in the game," said Coach Keith Ducey. "Ceres came to play and it was a battle, it gets no easier the next few weeks as we get deeper into AFC play. The Vikings come to town next week and that's going to be a battle for us as well."
The JV Thunder improved to 4-0 with a 26-6 win over the Seahawks. Kam'are Bailey had a long punt return for a TD and Ryan Garrett had a TD run for the Thunder. Aundre Sherman led the Thunder defense with many bone crushing hits. The win sets up a huge rematch of last year's AFC Championship game against the undefeated Turlock Vikings.
