Above the Rim was able to survive a break-out performance by NAIT guard Dennis Ashworth to win a highly entertaining contest by a score of 65-55. Ashworth was dynamic throughout the game scoring in a variety of ways including some high-difficulty baskets in traffic to finish with 20 points to lead the Eger Beavers. Jim Bonin’s early hot shooting coupled with Theo Parks attacking the rim set the tone for Above the Rim. The story on this night, however, was the aggressive play of Desmond McDonald on both ends of the ball. McDonald gave an inspired effort scoring a team-high 12 points and securing 11 rebounds. His frustrating post defense was key in neutralizing the Beavers’ inside advantage and giving his squad a chance at victory. Jim Bonin and Theo Parks each finished with 12 points as well. The wins set up a date with Ditka and company in the quarter-finals.
