Today was an exciting day for football in Mississauga. Members of the Central Mississauga Football Association’s Wildcats, Bobcats, Cougars and Tigers took to the field for the annual scrimmage day extravaganza. For some players and coaches, it was the first game they had ever been involved in and judging by their smiling faces, it won’t be their last!
It was also the first time that many parents had the chance to meet other parents in the association. The C.M.F.A. prides itself on its camaraderie, and family-centred approach and it was great to see some new faces and of course old ones helping out with the events of the day. Much behind the scenes work led up to today’s scrimmage.
Thank-you to Gary Dunlop and Jim McMahon for mentoring the new barbecue crew and to Jim, Dave and Bert for the equipping the players and getting them ready. Our equipment is top notch, thanks to them! On the registration front, the Zettler family, led by Christine, as well as Cathy, Jim and Robert have worked tirelessly to assemble all the documents and collect the fees. A great big hand also to all the people who have given their time to coach and instill the knowledge and love of the game in our Central players.
This year the C.M.F.A. ran the scrimmage day bbq. Shelley choreographed the event, with Christine’s support. It was a large undertaking but Shelley and her family did an outstanding job. A huge high five to Lew at M & M Meats in Hamilton who provided the bbq and all the meat. Thank-you to Adele, Olivia, Lisa, Chris, Dave, Lauren, Patrick, Shelley, Peter, Janice, Alysha, Grant, Keisha, John D., Mitzy, Mitzy’s husband, John L., Austin, James who helped to distribute the food and set up. A special thank-you to Jim McMahon, Patrick Good, the Dodd family and the Zettler family who volunteered the entire day!
Helping comes in many forms and several people contributed by generously donating money or items for the barbecue. Thanks also to Shannon ($20), Amira ($10), Curtis ($60), Lisa (trays & condiments), Janice (2 cases water, latex gloves, 2 dozen donuts), Gary ($ 50), Mitzi (4 cases pop), Lebaren ( 1 case water & pop), Tony (homemade muffins), Dave (cooler & ice), Franco (1 case water), James (trailer) and Jim’s niece (candy kebabs) who helped us to raise $ 730.00.
The barbecue fundraiser is just one of the many opportunities there are to volunteer/assist in the organization. This weekend at our first home game, we will require a time keeper, someone to hold the yard marker sticks, a down’s marker person, 50/50 sellers and a crew to sell Gatorade, pop, water, t-shirts, toques and old jerseys. The old adage, “Many hands make light work” and “It takes a village to raise a child” holds true. We need your help.
