SUPERIOR — Opening their Upper 13 baseball season with a doubleheader, Ashland C&S Design came away with a split decision against the Bayside Vipers Sunday.
Bayside held on for a 3-2 victory in the first game, as Ashland couldn’t cash in on its chances. In game two, C&S Design bounced back for a 5-1 win.
Ashland had plenty of runners in scoring position in the first game but couldn’t come up with any key hits. C&S Design loaded the bases in the second and third innings and came up empty and had runners at second and third in the fourth. The Vipers, meanwhile, strung together four straight hits in the third to plate two runs with Marcus Besonen and Bob Eastman driving them home. Bayside added an unearned run in the sixth that wound up looming large.
With C&S Design down to their final out in the seventh, John Sopiwnik delivered a two-run double. However, he was thrown out at third on the play to end the game.
Ashland, which stranded 13 runners, had nine hits with Brett Beeksma, Blake Ellefson and Sopiwnik each getting a pair. The loss went to Sopiwnik, who allowed six hits and thre walks, fanning seven. Corey Verhel was 2-for-4 for Bayside. Besonen was the winning pitcher.
In the second game, C&S Design got a four-hit complete game from Kody Schmock, who struck out four and walked two. Ashland scored in the second when Ellefson came in on Ben Hatinger’s two-out single. Jake Schraufnagel then doubled in two more in the third to make it a 3-0 game. While the Vipers got back within 3-1 after Casey Morsette led off the fifth with a triple and scored on a wild pitch, Ashland sealed matters with two runs in its half of the inning. Matt Hulmer, Schraufnagel and Scott Morland all had two hits each for Ashland, which finished with eight hits. The loss went to Adam McKowski.
C&S Design will host Proctor in a twinbill Sunday at 1 p.m. Bayside hosts Superior Sunday and will be at Port Wing Monday.
