Cost Comparisons
It seems that the most touchy of areas to address on any subject is finance. However, to better "frame" the context of cost in a comparison of youth soccer fees versus other fees that are customary for everday goods/services, we ask you to consider the following:
Breakdown of the dual season cost of C.Y.S.L. "Pee-Wee" Soccer.
Dual Season Cost $120.00 (with "fundraiser")
=$60.00 per season.
divided over 18 games (10 Spring - 8 Fall)
comes out to just over $6.50 per game (dual).
Comparison of other costs in family budgets
-Many families now own 2 cell phones and one standard phone. Conservative phone bill: $40.00 per month (times 3 = $120.00 Per Month! or $1440.00 per year!) Almost 14 kids could play 2 seasons for that cost alone.
-An exceptional cable television bill in today's market can usually be found for around $33.00 per month (if you "bundle"). Total for the year (without "on demand" fees), comes out to $396.00 per year, or the registration fee for more than three "Pee-Wee" players for two seasons.
-High-speed internet service is similar in cost to cable television service, and so, the math is the same.
A large cup of coffee at "Tim Hortons" is $1.60; times five work days = $8.00 per work week (if you only go once); which tallies-up to $416.00 per year! Almost 4 kids could play two seasons for that, and they get to keep the uniform!
The point of this writing isn't to make anyone feel guilty about what's spent on their discretionary expenses, but to put the cost of placing your child in athletics into better financial perspective.
With childhood obesity at record levels in the United States, and more kids diagnosed with ADD than ever before (possibly due to excessive passive entertainment), maybe the question should be, "What is the cost of NOT putting my child into athletics?"
Are the minds and health of our kids worth more than a cup of coffee? A show on cable? or the possibility of not immediately catching a phone call? We'll leave that answer up to you.
