SAINTS FALL TO MARTINS, FACE RICHMOND SATURDAY

NEW MUNICH--Aaron Vogt did all he could to keep the Saints in the game as the veteran right hander struck out five and scattered four hits but St. Martin edged Elrosa 2-1 Sunday afternoon in New Munich. Vogt pitched well into the 7th inning and continually bailed out the Elrosa offense who sputtered with guys on base. The Saints left 11 runners on base and only managed six hits in the game. Matt Schmitz connected for two of those hits and his RBI double in the third inning scored James Kuefler who led off the inning with a base hit to left field. Elrosa took the 1-0 lead into the sixth inning before the Martins scored on an error. The score remained 1-1 until the 9th inning when St. Martin scored on a squeeze bunt. Elrosa continually had chances all afternoon but failed to get a clutch hit when they needed it. Matt Middendorf, Ethan Vogt, and Pat Illies each contributed a hit while Cody Eichers earned two walks. The loss puts the Saints in the loser's bracket of the Region 15C tourney. A state tourney berth will be on the line Saturday when Elrosa faces Richmond at 1:30 p.m. in New Munich. If the Saints win, they will play at 4:30 p.m. versus the Meire Grove/Regal winner.
