East L.A. routed the Cougars, 41-3 for its first victory of the season.

This seemingly couldn’t be a better time for East L.A. College’s football team to be playing the American Division Pacific Conference part of its schedule.

Already with one conference victory under their belts, the Huskies (1-3, 1-0) host L.A. Pierce (1-2, 0-0) at 6 p.m. Saturday in conference action.

After dropping their first three games by a combined 131-62, the Huskies put together their best game of the season last Saturday in a 41-3 win over L.A. Southwest to open conference.

The defense was especially outstanding as it limited Southwest to just a field goal. Carlos Perez, a sophomore linebacker who prepped at Garfield High School, returned two interceptions for touchdowns to lead the way for the Huskies.

Southwest (0-4, 0-1) is struggling this year and so is Pierce, which has lost its last two games since opening the season with a 37-20 victory over Moorpark. The Brahma losses have been to Fullerton and Hancock.

ELAC’s defense, which shone against LASW, has to concern itself Saturday with Pierce running back Prince Young, who has rushed for 313 yards on 70 carries.

Quarterback Matt Wabby has thrown for 365 yards and three TDs.
