South Gate edges Granada Hills to reach DII title game

Lavell Thompson scored on a 41-yard run with nine minutes left for the go-ahead score and South Gate High School held on to edge host Granada Hills, 26-24 Friday in the semifinals of the City Section Division II football playoffs.

The Rams (8-5) advance to the title game against top-seeded San Fernando (13-0) next Friday at East L.A. College. The Tigers advanced with a 24-14 win over Chatsworth.

 

Granada Hills threatened to score late in the game after driving to the Rams’ three-yard line. But on fourth-and-goal, the Highlanders had a TD wiped out by an illegal block.

For Granada Hills (7-6) was led by quarterback Ramon Johnson, who was 10-for-12 passing for 267 yards and three TDs. Bryson Bowman caught three for 100 yards and two scores.

Running back Xavier Salazar rushed for 139 yards on 23 carries for the Highlanders.

Division III

View Park Prep 56, Torres 8

Top-seeded View Park Prep (13-0) cruised into the division final thanks to a 56-8 rout of Torres (8-4).

The Knights led, 20-0 after one quarter and 36-0 at halftime.

They will face Poly in the title game next Saturday. Poly knocked off Bernstein, 38-12 in its semifinal.
