No-hitters highlight Eastern openers

Wave Staff Report 13.MAR.08

Pitching has always been a strong component in Eastern League baseball and that was never in better evidence than Monday’s season openers.

Roosevelt High School’s Martin Villanueva, already a two-time All-City selection, and South Gate’s David Castaneda lifted the curtain on the league race by pitching no-hitters.

Villanueva’s gem, which included 13 strikeouts, was at the expense of rival Garfield by a score of 5-0. The lefthander’s effort enabled the Rough Riders to improve to 4-1 overall and drop the Bulldogs to 1-4.

Offensive support came from Eddie Almeda, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI, and Jose Nava, who had a double, triple and RBI.

Roosevelt hosts South East at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in an Eastern League game.

Castaneda’s no-hitter highlighted the Rams’ 2-0 victory over Jordan. He struck out eight with two walks and a hit batter. He faced just one batter over the minimum.

The game was the season opener for both schools.

Bell (2-0, 1-0) opened league Monday with an 8-2 victory over Huntington Park (0-5-1, 0-1).
