Rojas-led Wilson gets past Garfield

By RON GUILD, Sports Editor 25.SEP.08

Wilson High School’s football team attempts to build on its most recent success, while Garfield looks to recapture what it had three weeks ago this week.

The Mules, 20-14 winners over Garfield last Friday, take a 1-1 record into Friday’s 7 p.m. contest at Fairfax, also 1-1. Wilson dropped its opener to Roosevelt, 21-20. Fairfax is coming off a 20-8 win over Lincoln.

The passing of Jonathan Rojas to Anthony Denham has carried Wilson the first two weeks of the season.

Against Garfield, Rojas was 13 of 23 for 170 yards and a touchdown and Denham caught eight passes for 86 yards. James Fowler, with three receptions for 80 yards, was another favorite of Rojas, who rallied the Mules from a 14-0 halftime deficit.

Patrick Caceres (three solo tackles, seven assists) and Eric Vera (three, five) were instrumental in the defense shutting out Garfield (1-2) in the second half.

Since upsetting defending City Division champion Birmingham in week one, Garfield has lost to St. Paul and the Mules. It doesn’t get any easier this week since Marine League power San Pedro (2-0) comes to East L.A.

The Bulldogs will need solid efforts from their bread and butter, the running game, as well as effective passing from Patrick Vargas.

Sergio Macedo carried 15 times for 66 yards and Franky Diaz had six carries for 17 yards to lead the Bulldogs against Wilson. Vargas completed 14 of 28 passes for 160 yards and a touchdown. Dominic Lam, with four catches for 73 yards, was the leading receiver.
