Division II

Two more dissimilar teams couldn’t be found than in the City Section Division II final, set for 4 p.m. Friday at East L.A. College.

Top-seeded and defending champion San Fernando (13-0) features one of the most explosive passing attacks in the state.

Senior quarterback Cristian Solano is completing 69.8 percent of his passes for 3,870 yards and 42 TDs with just five interceptions. He’s a huge threat on the ground, as well, with 1,379 yards and 22 TDs. In the 21-14 semifinal win over Chatsworth, he passed for 294 yards and rushed for 153 yards and three scores.

Jose Camargo, who has 80 catches for 1,425 yards and 10 TDs, is his number one target. Charles Bell, who has 38 for 1,080 yards and 15 scores, is second.

South Gate (8-5), the fourth-place team from the Eastern League, is about as ground-bound as a team can be.

The Rams have rushed for 4,185 yards as a team, led by junior Lavell Thompson’s 2,201 yards and 30 TDs on 181 carries. He ran for 140 yards and a TD in last week’s 26-24 win over Granada Hills.

Sophomore James Shaw III, who has been coming on in the playoffs, has 490 yards and four TDs on the season. He ran for 158 yards and three scores last week.

Senior Alexander Flatos has 1,337 yards and 13 TDs on 127 carries as Thompson’s main running mate.
