Roosevelt finishes quarter short in the City playoffs

Wave Staff Report 29.MAY.08

Despite another strong pitching performance by Martin Villanueva, the Roosevelt High School baseball team saw its season end Friday in the City Section City Division quarterfinals.

Chris Reed scattered seven hits to lead Cleveland to a 2-1 victory over the Rough Riders at East L.A. College.

Villanueva (10-3) struck out seven and walked three in a two-hit effort. One of the hits, though, was especially costly to the two-time All-City selection.

In the fourth inning, Cleveland’s No. 7 hitter, Spencer Horowitz cracked a two-run home run and that proved to be the difference.

Reed (5-3) ran into some trouble in the seventh when he gave up a pair of two-out singles, but induced Jose Serna to fly out to end the game. Reed struck out six and walked four.

While Cleveland (25-7-1) earned a semifinal game at No. 2 Narbonne (26-6) this week, Roosevelt, the Eastern League champion and No. 3 seed, finished 32-6-1.
