Cardinals split with the Legion
The Geneva Cardinals opened up their season this weekend with a 7-1 win over the Van Wert Legion before dropping the back end of the twin bill. The Redbirds continued their unbeaten opening game skein behind the performance of Matt Holycross (New Haven, Manchester College) as he shut down the Legionaires allowing only one run over his 5 innings, striking out eight and giving up only one hit. Jaime Feldheiser (Ossian, Butler University) then finished the game striking out two more and giving up one hit. The Cards were led by new comer Chris Jarrett (Hagerstown, Anderson University) who went 2-4 on the opening game with a double and four stolen bases on the day. Not to be outdone, fellow newcomer Freddy Austin (Cleveland, Indiana Tech) single and walked in his at-bats and stole two bases as well. Corey Oetting (Decatur, Manchester college) went 2 of 2 and homered in his first swing of the year. Kraig Miller (Decatur, Goshen College) went 2-3 and doubled for the victors.
In game two, the Cardinals couldn't get much going offensivley as they scattered three hits on the day. Freddy Austin again stole two bases to go with his double and run scored. He was doubled in by Josh Selvey (Redkey, Tri-State U) and Donnie Kouzma (Muncie, Defiance College) also singled. Jared Baker (Fort Wayne, Manchester college) went 5 innings and took the loss giving up 2 runs with one earned and scattering four hist to go against four strikeouts with one walk. Jordan Liett (Limestone college, Versailles ohio) closed the final two innings facing seven batters and striking out 5 while walking one.
The Cardinals are at home on Friday night May 30th for South Adams Koufax night against the Summit City Red Sox. Matt Holycross will get his second start of the season.
