Why is coach being so hard on you?
Parents - Please be sure that your children read this.
Why should you go to bed earlier? Because your too tired the next morning! Why should you finish your homework first before watching TV? Because that is the only way to make sure your homework gets done in a timely manner. Seems obvious, but sometimes we get in the habit of sabotaging ourselves.
Much like your parents get tired of telling you to brush your teeth or go to bed, your coaches want to move on to more challenging things. We expect a lot out of each and every one of you. As such, we have high expectations. After so many years of being in soccer, you should now be proficient in dribbling and shooting with both feet. You should know beter than to toe-poke the ball on all of your shots. You should be able to go to either your left or right. You should know not to cross the ball in front of your own goal. You should recognize space and go to it. You should not play with your head always down. You should know what your responsibilities are for any position on the field. If not, you should seek help from the coaches, ask your parents, and practice in your spare time (even just a little). 45 minutes at the park helped Samantha get more power on her shots on goal.
We want to see you become better soccer players. We hope that is also your goal. We want to move on past the basics. YOU ONLY GET OUT IT WHAT YOU PUT INTO IT. If you want to grow, you have to apply yourself to what you do. You have to strive to do better. Practicing just a little will make a big difference. If you think practice is boring, then don't allow yourself to be bored. If you are tired of working on basics, then show you can do the basics so we can move on to better things.
ANYTHING WORTH DOING, IS WORTH DOING WELL. We think all of you are capable of so much more. You are a good team that can be so much greater - achieve so much more. Every now and then we see glimpses of what each of you can be, but you need to have the confidence to believe you can do it, and then you need to go out and prove it everyday. You, your parents, and your coaches are investing a lot of time in soccer. A successful season is not based on how many wins you get. Seriously! It's about how much you improve over last year. Did you grow as a player? Did you learn a new move? Did you get better at defense? Is your power kick stronger? Did you learn to play a new position? Are you playing smarter?
Ask yourself one simple question - "Am I doing the best that I can?" If your answer is yes, great! We will see you on the field. If your answer is no, then you need to ask yourself, "why that is?" Is it fear of failure? Failure is how we all learn. It's how we all get better. Soccer is no different than riding a bicycle or playing a video game. You make mistakes, you learn from those mistakes, YOU KEEP TRYING, and you get better (you grow as a person and move on).
In order for us to coach you, you have to be willing to try. Dedicate yourself to becoming a better soccer player. Make the effort. ALL WE ASK IS THAT YOU TRY.
