Hill Country Flag Football Information and FAQ’s
Pee Wee Flag (Player Ages: 5, 6 and 7)
Hill Country Pee Wee Flag Division plays in the Central Texas Youth Football Association (CTYFA) league which is made up of area football associations.
Hill Country Pee Wee Flag Division will play an 8-man game on teams made up of between 10 and 16 players.
All of Pee Wee Flag games are on Saturdays (usually in the morning or early afternoon).
Pee Wee Flag will have a game every Saturday between late August and early November with the exception of Labor Day weekend and possibly a bye week.
Since the Hill Country Pee Wee Flag Division is in the CTYFA and play against area football associations, some travel may be required to possibly Round Rock, Northwest Austin and other areas.
Depending on registration, it is possible to have several Pee Wee teams.
Rookies (Player Ages: 8&9), Juniors (Player Ages: 10&11), and Seniors (Player Ages: 12-14)
The Rookie, Junior and Senior Flag Divisions will play in the Town & Country league.
Teams in these divisions will play a 5-man game on teams made up of between 6 and 9 players. (Team size will depend on final registration numbers.)
All games will likely be at T&C. (It is possible this may change but is not likely to occur this year
Depending on the number of teams, most games will be played on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. It is possible that some games may take place on Thursdays or other week nights.
Practice
The scheduled practice times for flag teams are Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm.
Practice days, times and durations will depend a great deal on the coach.
Most teams will only practice for an hour or an hour and a half (again, depending on the coach and age of the kids),
Some teams will only practice once a week.
Some may practice on Saturdays before the season begins.
All practices will take place at the Friendship Baptist Church complex unless a coach receives approval for the team and the board to practice off the property.
All flag players will workout together for the first few practices (usually grouped by age). During these practices they will go through football drills and evaluation drills.
Coaching
Because the flag teams are small, we are always looking for coaches.
Coaches will be required to go through the coach certification training (an online course) and submit a background check. (For more info on coaching contact a flag league coordinator.)
Flag Football Frequently Asked Questions
Can girls play flag football at Hill Country? Yes, flag football is co-ed and open to both boys and girls. Although, there haven’t been many girls in the past, we encourage both boys and girls to participate and hope to have more in the future. Due to the number of players and teams there are no all-girl or all-boy teams.
What equipment do I need? The league provides the game jersey, flags, and footballs. Your child will need cleats, shorts, socks and mouthguard. Each team will determine the shorts, socks, etc that will make up the team uniform so don’t purchase these before you have a meeting with your team or consulting with the coach. For practice before teams have been selected players should wear a comfortable, cool t-shirt and either shorts, baseball pants, or football pants. (Baseball or football pants are often the best choice as they protect the legs and knees.)
When does practice begin? Practice for the flag teams is set to begin on August 1st for the Pee Wee Division and all other Divisions. These are estimated dates and will be confirmed later in the summer. Please check the website in July and after the 1st of August, for the most current information.
When does the season end? All flag games should be completed by November 12th. At present the expected last day for games will be November 5th. However the number of teams and weather conditions over the fall may cause that to change.
What paperwork do I need? All players will need a copy of their birth certificate and all parents must sign the parental behavior form.
What if I am not sure if my child wants to play Flag or Tackle? If you are uncertain but think your child might want to play tackle, it is likely best to sign up for tackle and start with the tackle players on August 1st. It is much easier for a child to move from tackle to flag than the other way around.
