The Fighting Irish took the lead early on their opening drive against Ohio State. Rahib Ismail (the Rocket) hauled in an 88 yard touchdown pass on the game's second play from scrimmage to make it 6-0 Irish. Ohio State would then be shutout the rest of the first quarter, but they came roaring back in the second quarter. The Buckeyes scored 21 unanswered points in the second quarter. The first touchdown came on a 6 yard pass from Craig Krenzel to Chris gamble. The second came on a 15 yard run by Ben Hartsock with :38 left to go in the half. Then he scored again on a 1 yard touchdown run just :27 seconds later, as the Irish got pushed backwards and turned the ball over to the Buckeyes. Nate Salley would haul in a 8 yard touchdown in the fourth to make the final 27-6 Buckeyes.
September 6, 2008 6p.m. "The Swamp" Gators Stadium
Ohio State Buckeyes 12
Florida Gators 13
What a game in the final game of the day. It was a defensive shootout in the first half, as both offenses found it difficult to move the ball. Florida lead 3-0 at halftime. The game did not open up until the third quarter. Following a Florida 35 yard field goal, Ben Hartsock returned the kickoff 100 yards for Ohio State to tie the game at 6. Then the extra point was blocked and we were tied at 6 going into the fourth. In the fourth, the Buckeye defense stepped it up getting the ball back for their offense. Following a 9 play drive, the Buckeyes took the lead on a 17 yard run by quarterback Craig Krenzel to make it 12-6 midway through the fourth. The difference in this game was the two point conversion attempt. The Buckeyes went for two, but Krenzel missed a wide open Hartsock for the conversion. With time running out the Gators began their final drive of the game. The Gators got a huge 45 yard kickoff return from Wynn to get the ball to midfield. Two plays later Chris Leak hit Jon Demps on a 55 yard touchdown pass. The Gators hit the extra point and lead 13-12 with less than one minute to play. The Buckeyes did not go down without a fight. Krenzel completed two big passes to get the ball to midfield, but time ran out on the Bucks, as they reached the Gators 35 yard line as time expired.
What a great day of football! Complete play-by-play coverage will be available soon in the game result section. Stats and photos are on their way soon as well, as the 2008 season has begun! Dates for our next meeting will be posted soon, but we have tentatively set the last Saturday in October as our next meeting in Elkhart, Indiana. Stay tuned for more HHEFL updates!
