2012 Playoff Format and Selection of Teams for Nationals

ESHL Playoff Dates March 2nd through 4th
Location: Brewster, NY

Selection of Teams for ESHL Playoffs:

The first seed is the top team based on regular season win percentage (see below for tie breaker rules).
The second seed is the other conference winner.
Third through eight seeds are selected based on regular season win percentage (see below for tie
breaker rules).

Format:
The eight playoff teams will be divided into two playoff divisions as follows:

American Division: Seeds 1, 4, 5 and 8
National Division: Seeds 2,3,6 and 7

Teams in each division will play a round robin within their division.

For each game, points will be awarded as follows:
Two points for a win in regulation time, if tied after regulation each team shall be awarded one point with the team that wins in overtime or a shootout receiving one additional point. (See game format below for overtime)

Selection of ESHL Teams for Nationals:
The winner of the Playoff Championship Game is the ESHL Playoff Champion and shall be our number one seed for the Nationals the loser of that game shall be our number two seed.

Tie breaker rules (applied to Playoff performance)
Team with the most wins
Team with the fewest losses
Team with the better head-to-head record
Team scoring the higher number of goals for
Team with the lower number of goals against t
Team with the larger goal differential (goals for minus goals against)

Game Format:
Three 20-minute periods with ice cut in between each period.
Warm-ups are 10 minutes and there is always an ice cut in between warm-ups and the start of the game (warm-ups can be on dirty ice or clean ice depending on what precedes the game)
Games cannot end in a tie. In case overtime is needed, teams go to locker rooms, ice is cut, 20 minutes is put on the clock, and the first team to score wins. If the game is still tied, additional overtime periods are played (after an ice cut) until a winner emerges. Overtime is played 5-on-5. Host venue provides pucks for warm-ups and games.
Host venue provides music for warm-ups, play stoppages, and time between periods.
Host venue provides EMT, videographer, scorekeeper, and timekeeper for each game.
League provides game sheets and referees.
League enters game results into Pointstreak.
