Training At Game Speed
When trying something new in training (whether it's working on a new move or a new three person combination) it's good to start slow to make sure you are doing it right, as the level of competency rises, it's vital to increase the speed the activity is done in order to make it more game related. Too often players get comfortable doing something and keep doing it at that speed in order to remain comfortable, however, it's important that players be willing to leave their comfort zone and try to go faster and faster.
The key to encouraging players to go faster is to do two things. First, offer as much encouragement as possible to take chances. Also, allow the players to make mistakes. If the coach is critical of mistakes, the players will be hesitant to take chances and leave their comfort zone.
Teams that train at full speed are able to play at full speed. Teams that train slowly, end up playing slowing and when they are put under pressure in a game situation, they are not able to handle it at all. Teams that train at full speed handle pressure situations in games much more often.
