Sharks Finish 3rd At Challenge of Champions
The Long Island Baymen Sharks participated in the Challenge of Champions at Rehoboth Beach Delaware this past weekend. The Sharks faced the toughest competition to date with some very close and exciting games.
On Friday, the Sharks faced the York Young Revolution from Pennsylvania and played very well on the offensive and pitching side. The Sharks struggled defensivley and allowed 7 unearned runs. The Sharks soon realized that all the teams in the tournament came to play, and play hard. The Sharks fell 7-5 and then faced the soon to be Champions of the tournament, the Delaware Magic BB red team.
The Sharks jumped out early with a 3-1 run lead but again errors hindered the Sharks. The Magic did not give up and scored 2 runs to go ahead in the last inning. The Sharks fell 5-4 and prepared to face the Sayville Cardinals on Saturday.
The Sharks opened up Saturdays game against the Sayville Cardinals in an explosive offensive first inning. 9 runs crossed the plate and the Sharks looked like they were back to their old form. Defensively the Sharks played much better and ended the game in the third inning after the Sharks reached the run-rule of 15 runs.
The second game for Saturday was played against the New Team Era. The Sharks fell quickly behind and were losing 9-3 in the last inning. The Sharks fought back to score 4 runs and had the go ahead run at the plate with 2 outs. The last out was made by the shortstop who made a very nice play to force the runner at second and preserve the win, 9-7.
On Sunday the Sharks entered the playoffs and faced the Ronkonkoma Cardinals. Pitching and defense were outstanding on both teams as one spectacular play was made after another. The Sharks took the lead 2-1 going into the last inning but the pesky Cardinals would not give up and tied the game on a stolen base with 2 outs.
The Sharks did not give up and scored the go ahead run in the top of the seventh and again faced the Cardinals who were able to load the bases with 2 outs. The last batter hit a ground ball to short and the play was made to first to end the game 3-2.
The Sharks advanced to the next round facing the Delware Magic BB Red team who played excellent baseball and kept the Sharks offense in check. The Sharks could not get a good inning going and fell 10-4. The Magic went on to win the tournament. The Sharks finished 3rd in the standings, playing some very tough teams.
The team had a great time in Delaware playing baseball, going to the beach, playing in the pool and talking with friends from other teams. This was a great overall experience for the kids and parents. We look forward coming back to Delaware and having a great time.
Thanks to all the parents in preparing and getting their families to the tournament. We appreciate all your hard work and dedication to the team!
