Stars win first League Match
The Stars kicked off the Fall season with their first match in LIJSL U15 Division 1 against Rockville Center at Dean Skelos Sports Complex. The Stars entered the match with only one sub as Rachel is still nursing a broken foot and Samantha and Kristen were not available to play due to illness. Mother Nature was more than accommodating though, as the cloud cover made for a cool and comfortable afternoon. The Stars started strong in the first half, maintaining the possession but were unable to get the ball into the net although they had their chances. The half would end with a 0-0 tie and the coaching staff looking to make some adjustments to try to create more opportunities.
The adjustments reaped immediate rewards as Erica took the opening pass and dissected the defense to score the first goal of the match seconds into the second half. The goal seemed to take the pressure off the team as they were able to score two more goals in the first 10 minutes to take a 3-0 lead. The second goal of the match was scored by Daniella as the RVC keeper made a save that rolled about 7 feet away from her. As she scrambled to recover the deflection, Daniella was able to pull it back to maintain the possession. With the keeper on the ground after a failed diving attempt to recover the ball, Daniella was able to chip it over her and into the net. Daniella also participated in the third goal as she dropped a beautiful cross from the left that Taylor was able to knock in to give the Stars a 3-0 lead. What was most impressive was how much cleaner the passes became in the second half as well as timing of the runs. Sydney was able to make several runs up the middle from her center back position, once even getting about 30 yards from the opposing net before taking a shot. Shannon made a great run down the left side getting past 2 RVC defenders before sending the cross to the right side.
The Stars tried valiantly to preserve the shutout. At one point it appeared that the shutout was in the cards as the RVC squad mounted the best scoring opportunity of the match sending a hard hit shot from Kara's left that looked like it was going in. Kara left her feet and managed to get a hand on the ball and knocked it down towards the right where Nicolette was perfectly positioned to clear the ball. But the shutout was not meant to be as the RVC squad managed to score with a minute left in the match to finish 3-1. The Stars will next face Garden City at home in two weeks.
