Stars win Premier Bracket at Covanta
The Stars battled through very formidable opponents to capture the title in the Premier Division at Covanta this past weekend. After a 2-0 start on day 1 of the tournament, they had to battle FC Sting Bees, East Islip Red Dragons and East Meadow Sparks on day 2. They finished the Tournament with 4 wins and 1 loss to capture the title. They started the day off with a 3-1 win over the FC Sting Bees. They got goals from Taylor, Erica and Madison with assists from Amanda, Taylor and Erica. The defense played tough and the Stars did a great job in maintaining the possession throughout the match. The win set up the match with the other undefeated team in the bracket, East Islip Red Dragons. These two teams know each other well enough as they competed in the State Cup Championship just a few months before. At that time the Red Dragons prevailed as they made it all the way to the Regional Championship this past summer before losing to PDA. This weekend, the Stars would come out on top finishing with a 4-3 win. They got two goals from Erica, a goal from Madison on a PK and a goal from Amanda on a corner kick she bent in and hit off a Red Dragon before going into the net. The assists came from Amanda and from Shelby. It was an overall great effort by the entire team as they won most of the 50/50 battles, distributed the ball extremely well, remained poised after the Red Dragons tied the match at 2-2, kept up their stamina to the final whistle and just refused to lose this match. The win guaranteed the Stars would win the Division but also took a physical toll on the girls as they had nothing left for the final match against EM, losing 2-0. Overall a great showing by the Stars, much improved over the play last weekend at Spirit United.
