Stars win two in a row!
The Stars played their first home game this weekend against the Garden City Daredevils at Burn's Park. The day was cold with rain falling throughout the match as the Stars looked to make it two wins in a row. The first half of this match was an extremely physical one with the Garden City squad looking to push the Stars around the field. Several Stars would end up on the turf including Madison who fell down hard, landing awkwardly on her wrist and forcing her to come off the field late in the first half to get her wrist wrapped. The Stars would get on the board first when Nicole dribbled the ball down the right side, beating a Garden City defender and getting off a great cross that sailed over the keeper to a streaking Taylor who volleyed it in for a 1-0 lead. The Stars played a strong defense throughout the first half as the back line of Nicolette, Sydney, Courtney and Daniella, with support from Kristen and Samantha, shut down any offensive attack Garden City could muster, holding them to just one shot on goal in the half.
In the second half, the Stars continued to play an excellent possesion game. Starting with Erica and Shelby and continuing once Madison came back in, the Stars controlled the middle of the field, getting excellent through passes out to the wings and forcing the Garden City squad to shoot the ball long where the Stars defense sat waiting to send the ball back up. Nicole was able to send a beautiful through ball that Erica was able to catch up to just before the keeper could come out to make the stop. In one slick move, Erica was able to jump over the sliding keeper and shoot across the box to give the Stars a 2-0 lead. Over a 15 minute stretch of the second half, the Stars kept the ball in the Garden City end of the field taking several shots on goal which were stopped by the Garden City keeper. The defensive back field which included Amanda, Sydney, Courtney and Nicolette only allowed one shot on goal in the second half. In total Garden City would get off only 2 shots on goal with Kara making both saves for the first shutout of the season.
