RULES MCSA Boys' Basketball Rules rules GAMES, Freshman, Sophomore, Juniors, & Seniors two 20 minute halves running time. Seniors and Juniors: Clock stops on whistle last two minutes of each half. Pros, 4 - 7 minute quarters with clock stopping on each whistle. Pregame warm-up is to be five minutes if it has not passed game time. If the game prior ends within 3 minutes of game time or later, then 2 minute warm-up time is all that is allowed. This is why all teams should have assistant coaches and scorers ready before the game! Since we only play zone defense in the senior and pro division, the clock will stop approximately every 5 minutes for subs, but will restart within 10 seconds. No team can stall the restarting of the game in any way. The referee shall award possession to the opposing team and start play if any delay in the leading team to return to the court. The clock will stop the last two minutes of each half in all divisions except freshman and Sophomore. HALFTIME Two minutes PRESS Freshman and Sophomores, NO! Juniors - Last 2 minutes of each half, strict man to man. Seniors and Pros - High school rules No pressing when up by 15 points, can repress when lead is down to 14. LANE VIOLATION Freshmen and Sophomores - 5 seconds Juniors, Seniors and Pros - 3 seconds DOUBLE TEAM Freshman - NO Sophomores and Juniors - YES - From foul line extended to base line. No triple team. Seniors, and Pros - YES. anywhere any time DEFENSE Freshman, Sophomore, and Juniors - Man to Man, within 6 Feet of the man, unless he is involved with a double team. Seniors and Pros can play any defensive style they wish. Freshman, Sophomore and Juniors, no player has to guard his man if he is not within the three point arch, or foul line extended. As soon as his player is in the zone, he has to be either within 6 feet of the man he is guarding, or involved with a double team. At no time can a defender be waiting behind his own player, waiting for the player with the ball to get passed his defender, so that he can then pick up the ball handler, this is in effect a zone, and is illegal. All zone defense is illegal. Players can not leave their man to double team a player not yet within the foul line extended. Upon the third time a team is called for an illegal defense The opposing team will be awarded 1 point instead of a technical foul shot, and retain possession of the ball. Each illegal defense from that point forward will result in 1 point in place of a technical foul shot, and possession of the ball. So not to punish the defense if the offensive team is spreading their team out to the outskirts of the defensive zone, in order to isolate his player or players, the referee can be lenient on the 6 foot rule. This is because the game is for all ten kids on your team and not just your best players. PLAYING TIME All players must play a minimum of half a game. Sub every five minutes. No player can play 3 shifts in a row, if you only have 9 players at a game, 4 different kids play an additional shift. If you only have 8 players, all 8 players must play an additional shift. If you only have 7 players 5 kids play 6 shifts and 2 players play 5 shifts. If a player has an injury and can not continue these rules apply. If a player gets hurt with more then three minutes left in his shift, two shall split the remaining 3 minutes of the injured players shift. If less the 3 minutes are left in the injured players shift one player can play whole remaining time of injured players shift without being penalized during their shift. If injured player can not play their next shift a different player must take his place as per original playing time rules. If a team has a player or players showing up to game late they are to follow rules as from that moment on. If a teams best player shows up at half time he still only gets two shifts unless the team has 9 players or less. Then he shall play 3 shifts but not in a row. If a player fouls out, please follow injured players guidelines. only time a team can player can play 3 or 4 shifts in a row is when they only have 5 or 6 players. Subs in ALL DIVISIONS EXCEPT PROS, is every 5 minutes. In the event a team has only 6 players the coach can sub every few minutes or so, but should sum in order, no player should sit twice before another teammate has sat once. UNLESS, a player is struggling with the running up and down the court for either asthma or weight. A coach may make a one time switch in the middle of a shift in order to realign his team. I.E. Player 1 is going to play 3 shifts in second half because team has only 9 players. Coach may have him in for 1st shift and half of second, and realize he won't have a ball handler in third shift so takes player out in 2nd shift, and puts him back in mid way through the third shift. and can play 4th shift as well. This can only happen once in a game, if coach does this a second time sub shall not be permitted. Coaches must sub all players every 5 minutes of each half with 10 players. If a player gets in foul trouble, he should remain in game. If he is a top player and coach pulls him out half way through his shift, he can not play again until his shift comes up again. Can not take him out last two minutes of his shift to then take another players shift. COACHES ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR PLAYERS, PARENTS AN ASSISTANTS. NO TOLERANCE RULE AS PER COACHES MEETING.
