Muskrat Pitchers Finish off Section 6 Shutout
In a season where the bats have been a big story, the great performance of the pitching staff had yet to steal the headlines. Until Wednesday's 7-2 and 9-1 doubleheader sweep of the Watford City Walleye. That sweep also gave the Muskrats a 12-0 Section record and the Section 6 regular season title. Along with the #1 seed in next weeks tournament.
In their biggest doubleheader of the season the Muskrats got a couple of gems on the hill. Combined with Richard Cormiers effort on Tuesday the Skrats pitching has been big down the stretch.
Ian Anderson and Frank Kopa combined for 27 strikeouts and only 8 hits and 3 runs over 14 innings of work. They split the innings up evenly, but Anderson got the edge in strikouts (15) and hits (3). It was the strength of those two arms that carried the Muskrats through a few lulls on the offensive side. But the bats eventually did their job too.
Besides the great performances on the mound Renville County (35-3, 12-0) wasn't at all bad in the batting half of the innings. The Skrats pounded out 29 hits and scored 16 runs. Renville stranded baserunners in quite a few innings but stayed calm and drove runners across the plate in the later innings to put away both games one and two.
In game one it was Adam Undlin's 2-out, 2-RBI double that staked RC to a 6-1 lead that put the end to some building Walleye momentum. That was just part of a 5-8 effort by the bottom of the Muskrats order. Richard Cormier and Jarod Weathers were both 2-3. Frank Kopa went 3-4 for the Skrats.
Game two's big moment came off the bats of the Costello brothers. Caleb broke a 0-0 tie in the fifth with a 2-RBI single and Jacob hit a 3-run homer two batters later to stake the Muskrats to a 5-0 lead. Brady Hefter had a two-out triple in the 6th to knock in a run and Adam Undlin had a two out single to bring in the 7th run in the seventh. Undlin's at bat was followed immediately by Frank Kopa's 6th HR of the season. Caleb Costello went 4-5 to lead the hit parade.
Next Up
Renville County (35-3, 12-0) hosts Velva on Thursday in Sherwood. The game time has been changed to 6 p.m. Renville will be looking to finish the season up with some momentum and try to take the season series from Velva.
