The Wade Duggan Memorial Fund

Our Mission:  To help remove the statement, “No, I can’t afford it.”

On March 12th, 2009 our friend/former teammate/co-worker/family member was tragically lost in the Cougar Flight 491 crash.  Wade’s love & dedication to hockey was common to many of us.  In 2011, it was decided to start an annual hockey tournament for fellow workers in the Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Oil Industry.  The purpose of the tournament is to celebrate Wade Duggan’s life, love of hockey, and to bring together workers from the offshore for an honorable cause.

It takes great sacrifice by families to have children play minor hockey these days.  These sacrifices demand a tremendous family commitment of both time and money.  Hockey is a sport where we have the pleasure of meeting and befriending many wonderful people throughout the years.  Unfortunately, hockey is a sport which we have seen first hand, young players unable to play due to the cost of travel, equipment, and rising fees.  We as an organization developed a plan to help combat this issue.  Though the money we raised from our annual tournaments, The Wade Duggan Memorial Fund is looking to sponsor minor hockey players, male and female, to play in the upcoming 2013/2014 season.

For the 2011-2012 hockey season, The Wade Duggan Memorial Fund sponsored 6 minor hockey players.   The 2nd Annual Wade Duggan Memorial Rec Hockey Tournament, held in April 2012, was a greater success and we were able to sponsor 14 children to play.  This year’s 2013 tournament was once again a huge success, with 10 teams entered from the NL offshore community.  With 3 Hibernia Teams, Team Searose, Henry Goodrich, Glomar Grand Banks, Hyflodraulic, Maersk Supply Services, Atlantic Towing, & the West Aquarius Team, it was our greatest funding raising event so far!

For the upcoming 2013-2014 hockey season, The Wade Duggan Memorial Fund is looking to sponsor young players to play.  They can be new or returning players.  We are asking people involved in the Newfoundland & Labrador hockey community to keep an ear and eye out for any players or potential players that are in need of assistance.  These players can be anyone you hear of that are in need of monetary help in any way.  Anything from new equipment, player house league registration, all-star registration, hockey camp registration, or players needing assistance for travel cost.  We want to help remove the statement, “I can’t afford it.”  Whether it be for a single parent child, a child from a family dealing with illness, or just a young player that is good enough to play all-star hockey, but feels it is too much of a burden on his family to pursue it any further.  The Wade Duggan Memorial Fund would like to help these families and youth players.

Please feel free to email any of the committee members listed below if you have any information that can aid our cause.

Thank you for your time.
