10/20 - Old Mill strikes early
Tuesday October 20, 2009 - Old Mill 2, Northeast 0.

Saves - Josh Meekins 5.

From the Maryland Gazette:

by Pat O'Malley

Coaches love it when their teams jump out early on their opponents and their defenses take over.  Count Old Mill coach Nick Klug amoung them.  His Patriots tallied a pair of goals in the first 28 minutes last night and made them stand up in a 2-0 boys soccer victory over Northeast.  Ryan Milligan and Jimmy Dutcher scored first-half goals about eight minutes apart and defenders Damian Ramos and Perry Clark closed the door.

The Eagles were outshot 20-5 and Patriots goalkeeper Eric Fernholz made two saves.  With a win at home again tomorrow night against Annapolis, where the Patriots (5-6) are unbeaten, they could seal fifth place and a good draw in the playoffs.  "It was a good win for us," said Klug, who beat his old high school coach, Northeast's Sam Tanner.  "We've had trouble scoring goals this year.  We put the two away early tonight and held onto that lead."

Tanner was impressed with Old Mill, which got assists from Matt Matousek and Ian Erickson.  "They're very quick, and their first touch is great, and are patient and knock the ball around," Tanner said.  "We just couldn't get the ball from them."

The early offensive punch coupled with  the Patriots' solid defense, led by Ramos, got the job done.  "We always match him up with othe other team's top forward," Klug said.  "He was an All-County defender last year and looks to be that way this year.  And another senior, Perry Clark, in the midfield, keeps possession and distributes very well.  Clark complements Ryan Milligan in the middle very well."

Josh Meekins' five save kept the Eagles in the game.

Northeast (4-9)  0 0 - 0
