Baker's 3 wins it for Frenchtown in 2OT

FRENCHTOWN -- Sometimes heroes can be found in unlikely places.

Frenchtown's Cade Baker, a freshman who had just two points at the end of regulation Friday, drilled the game-winning 3-pointer in a 76-75 double overtime boys' basketball victory against Polson.

Trailing by two with 12 seconds left in 2OT, Frenchtown exited a timeout with a play set up that fed the ball to the open man on the perimeter. That was Baker, who connected from the corner.

Frenchtown (5-4 in league, 2-0 overall) had led 51-37 after three quarters before a late charge by Polson (4-5, 1-1) behind its senior tandem of Tanner Wilson and Matthew Rensvold. They surged all the way back to tie it 58-all.

"They were really clock watching in the fourth quarter," Frenchtown coach Mark Quinn said of his boys. "We were hoping that the clock was gonna win the game for us, but they settled down once we got into overtime."

Austin Means played all 40 minutes and led Frenchtown with 22 points. Rensvold had 27 for Polson, including 10 in the fourth quarter, and Wilson scored 21 more.

Chrishon Dixon, Jet Campbell help Billings Central put away Sidney

While crowd pleasing, the 3-pointer wasn’t really helping Billings Central separate from Sidney.

The Rams opted for lock-down defense, outscoring the Eagles by 14 points in the second quarter on the way to a 65-50 Eastern A victory at the Ralph Nelles Center on Friday night.

The Rams (5-2, 2-1) host Glendive at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, while the Eagles (5-2, 1-2) travel to Laurel.

Chrishon Dixon led Central with a double-double of 15 points and 16 rebounds. The sophomore point guard also had six assists and four steals. Teammate Jet Campbell added a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

Brett Norby scored a game-high 31 points for Sidney, including seven 3-pointers. He was also 8 for 11 from the free throw line.

The two teams combined for six 3-pointers — three apiece — in the opening minutes. But Central could not get pull away after a few more long-range attempts missed.

“We decided after a while to stop taking ill-advised 3-pointers,” said Campbell. “You get caught up in that. It takes you a few misses to make you realize you need to score in other ways. We took it to the rack and it paid off.”

Central used an 8-0 burst that grew to 20-2 in the second quarter to put the game away.

“We came together and talked about it at halftime. We had to execute better than we did in the first half,” Campbell said. “Defensively, we got a hand in their faces.”

The Rams also increased the pressure and put Shay Dantic on Norby. Norby, who had 12 points in the first quarter, had none in the second.

“He (Norby) has a lot of confidence in his game and that’s half the battle with a high school player,” said Central head coach Jim Stergar. “You have to try and take him out of his rhythm. We put Shay Dantic on him in the second quarter and Shay put the clamps on him.”

The Rams led 37-22 at halftime.

Campbell scored nine of his points in the third quarter. “I caught the ball and was open,” he said. “I shot it when it was there.”

Central led by as many as 23 before Norby hit a flurry of 3-pointers in the fourth quarter against the Rams’ reserves.

“We started trapping and pressing,” Stergar said. “We wanted to speed up the tempo of the game a little bit. The kids did a good job of mixing up defenses to keep Sidney off-balance.”

Ten different players scored for Central.

Sidney was without senior point guard Dawson McGlothlin, who has a hamstring injury.
