Ponies beat Malta for first win

Havre's Nate Korb scored 17 points to help the Blue Ponies beat the Malta Mustangs in Malta Tuesday night.

After an 0-4 start, it was hard to know what to expect from the Havre High boys basketball team, on the road, in Malta.

But against a team that defeated the Blue Ponies twice last season, Havre found a way to play its best game to date this season and in the process, upended the Mustangs 59-56 on their home floor Tuesday night.

The Ponies, who have struggled to score so far this season, had no such problems in Malta, jumping out to an 19-8 at the end of the first quarter. HHS continued its hot start, added 15 points in the second quarter, to take a 34-23 lead over Malta at halftime.

Havre maintained its lead in the third quarter, thanks to another 13-point showing, giving the Ponies a 10-point advantage, 47-37, with eight minutes to play. Early in the fourth, Malta had gotten within seven, but a key bucket by Jacob LaBrie and a 3-pointer by Isaac Warp pushed the lead to 54-45.

From there, Malta went on a 9-0 run to get back within two points at 56-54, but two free throws by Nate Korb extended the lead to four and Havre hung on for the 3-point victory.

“We were more active on the defensive end,” HHS head coach Curt Leeds said. “And we had some shots fall in the first couple of minutes and that gave us some confidence on the offensive end.”

After scoring fewer than 40 points in their last two games, the offensive outburst was needed for Havre, which scored at least 12 points in all four quarters. Korb, who made two clutch free throws late, led the way for the Ponies with 17. LaBrie added 14 in the game; Ivar Aageson and Ryan Bakke each had nine and Warp finished with six. Havre connected on six 3-pointers, with three coming from LaBrie.

HHS is now 1-4 on the season and will play one last game before the holiday break. The Ponies will host CMR Great Falls High tonight at 7 inside the HHS gymnasium.
