Laurel tops Belgrade in divisional championship

The Laurel Locomotives are heading to the Class A state tournament as the Eastern No. 1 seed after defeating the Belgrade Panthers 64-50 in the Central/Eastern A Divisional championship game Saturday night at Rimrock Auto Arena at MetraPark.

Layne Willis led all scorers with 30 points, tying a tournament-high for the weekend. Christian Jones and Shay Osborne each added 12 points for Laurel.

Willis was sharp from the beginning, scoring 13 of his team's first 15 points to jump-start Laurel's offense, which struggled in the first half, only shooting 35 percent from the field.

"In the locker room, (Laurel coach Pat Hansen) told us to come out and attack right away," Willis said. "I put it on myself to do my part and get out there and score some points."

Willis, along with Osborne and Jones, were all sophomores when Laurel won the Class A state championship two years ago.

Willis said he's looking forward to getting back to the tournament.

"It's something I'll remember with these boys, winning divisionals," Willis said gesturing towards his team. "Hopefully that next goal of winning state becomes a reality."

Belgrade led 24-23 at halftime thanks to a 12-point first-half performance from Dawson Fowler. Fowler finished the game with 15 points while teammate Brock Salsbury led the team with 17.

Laurel had a 15-3 run in the third quarter that gave the Locomotives a 38-27 lead. Belgrade was able to cut that deficit to six by the end of the quarter after Fowler scored on a layup about 10 seconds before the buzzer sounded.

"We won some games different ways this weekend," Hansen said. "The bottom line is Layne Willis was huge for us this game. Layne came out with a great mindset of attacking the basket. He got in a great rhythm, kept us in the game in the first half, and kept that confidence all the way through that second half.

"We always are (looking forward to the state tournament). Those kids really enjoy each other and the longer they can spend more time together, they want that."

A 10-2 run in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter helped the Locomotives pull away again.

Belgrade is returning to the state tournament after missing last year, while Laurel is heading to its 10th straight.

"These guys will be hungry to get back to the state tournament and perform well," Belgrade coach Mike Deming said. "We'll be excited to go to the state tournament. Right now we're down a little bit simply because we wanted to win this tournament and prove that we're one of the better teams in the state.

"There's no doubt we are. It just wasn't our night tonight."

Earlier in the day, both Billings Central and Hardin also clinched spots in the Class A state tournament. Central defeated Hardin 45-30 to grab the Eastern No. 3 seed while Hardin will enter the tournament at No. 4.

Both teams dropped their openers of the tournament. Hardin was defeated by Lewistown on Wednesday while Central lost to Browning on Thursday.

The Rams followed the loss up with wins over Miles City on Friday and Lewistown on Saturday morning to clinch a spot at state.

"There's a lot of different routes you can take to get to the state tournament," Central coach Jim Stergar said. "We did it the hard way again. We battled and just kept our focus on a survive and advance mentality.

"These guys, they came out tonight and finished the job for the weekend and I was proud of them for hanging in there."

This is the third straight year the Rams have made the state tournament. Stergar's teams have made the state tournament four out of the five years he has been the coach.

Hardin is 2-for-2 in making the state tournament with Andrew Round Face as head coach. The Bulldogs missed the state tournament the year before Round Face took over.

The Bulldogs followed up their loss with a win over Livingston on Thursday and a win over Sidney on Friday. Hardin defeated Browning Saturday morning to clinch a spot at state.

In both years since the combined divisionals began, Laurel, Hardin, and Billings Central have all made the state tournament.

"It was a great feeling," Round Face said about making state again. "We took the long route, but we'll take it. It kind of looked dark after Wednesday, but we turned around and fought all the way back.

"It makes it a little bit sweeter when you know you have to fight through all of these other teams just to get back into it."
