Belgrade gets back to state tournament with win over Lewistown

The Belgrade Panthers were the first boys team to clinch a spot at the Class A state tournament as they defeated Lewistown 58-44 Friday night in the Central/Eastern A Divisional semifinal.

Dawson Fowler led all scorers with 20 points while Brock Salsbury added 15 and Trey Layman scored 10. The Panthers are returning to the state tournament after missing out last season.

"Everybody wants a ticket to the state tournament," Belgrade coach Mike Deming said. "It doesn't matter if it's March Madness for college teams. They're all playing in their tournaments to get a ticket to the big dance. We approached that in the game tonight. This is our opportunity to get a ticket.

"To have Dawson come out and play under the lights and hit some shots, everybody fed off of him I thought."

Belgrade now awaits the winner of Laurel and Browning for the championship game which will be on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Jaden Graham scored 13 points for the Golden Eagles. Lewistown will play Billings Central at 9 a.m. on Saturday at Metra.

"I think it's good for us to see what we're really made of. Tonight we played well," Fowler said. "Wednesday (against Sidney) I was just a little out of it. Wasn't feeling really good. I think tonight I bounced back.
