Palm Harbor’s game Wednesday was a rematch of sorts against cross-town rival East Lake. East Lake, one of the hottest teams in the county – winners of their last nine games - beat PHU in the finals of The 47th Annual Dunedin Classic Tournament. These two squads know each other very well with many of the players from both squads participating on the same teams in travel ball, and in addition, years of playing against each other in little league All-Stars. With loads of MLB and College scouts in attendance, The Canes were well aware of the previous game and came out battling with plenty of stellar pitching, offense and defense in route to their outstanding 4-3 win over the Eagles.

Freshman Andrew Booth was called upon to start and not only did he deliver, Booth shined and dazzled! Booth consistently worked ahead and kept the Eagle hitters off balance as the lefty Freshman sensation impressed many with a complete game win. Booth, in command all day, tossed seven innings scattering six hits, only one walk, two strikeouts and a pick-off in the southpaw’s much deserved victory.

Offensively, Palm Harbor got ahead early in the first inning with the help of the experience and power from Senior John Pichman. Senior Adam Jurco walked and stole second and third. With two outs, Pichman loads up on two strike hanging curveball and sends a towering shot over the left field fence for his second home run of the year – and his second in as many consecutive of bats – for the early 2-0 PHU lead. Pichman was 2-3, HR, single, reached on error, run scored on the day.

East Lake got one run back in the third inning and two more runs in the sixth inning for the 3-2 lead – but PHU was determined. Senior AJ Hrica (2-3, run scored) singled in the bottom half of the sixth to lead off the inning. Senior Riley Degnan (1-2, run scored, walk, stolen base) executes a spectacular bunt up the first base line safely for the single advancing Hrica to second base. Pichman reaches on an error to put the bases full of Hurricanes. Senior Brian Brown knocks a high bouncing single over the third baseman’s head scoring Hrica and the speedy Degnan for the Canes 4-3 lead.

Booth came back on the hill in the 7th inning and struck out the first batter and proceeded to get the next two East Lakes batters to pop up to end the game for the exciting win.

Palm Harbor travels to Largo on Thursday, April 7th with the first pitch slated for 5:00 p.m.
