WP - Degnan

The Palm Harbor Hurricanes baseball squad played a rare Saturday afternoon game vs Winter Haven. Great pitching, good defense and exceptional clutch hitting highlighted the exciting late inning 5-4 victory for PHU.

Senior John Pichman took the start and tossed four full impressive innings of work scattering six hits and a strikeout. Senior Riley Degnan was brought in relief for the final three innings and gave up no runs, no walks with three strikeouts to earn the win.

Offensively The Canes, down 3-0, got on the board in the 3rd inning when Junior Joe Mattei (2-3, run scored) sharply singled to lead off the inning. Senior Evan DiFransesco advances Mattei to second on a groundout. Senior Kyle Bailey (1-2, 2 runs scored) walks. Senior AJ Hrica (2-3, RBI) lines a single scoring the hustling Mattei as Bailey advances to third. Senior Adam Jurco singles to score Bailey making the score 3-2 in favor of the Winter Haven Blue Devils.

Winter Haven scores another run in the top half of the 4th inning but the Canes gets that run right back when Senior Brian Brown (2-3, 2 RBI, run scored) leads off the inning and greets a first pitch fastball that gets out in a hurry for a homerun and his round-tripper of the season.

With Degnan blanking the Blue Devils for the next three innings and down 4-3, PHU had one more opportunity in the bottom of the 7th. Bailey leads off the inning with a single, followed by another Hrica single. Degnan, hitting to the right side of the diamond, reaches on fielder’s choice advancing Bailey to third. Jurco proceeds to blast a shot up the middle glancing off the pitcher that bounces to the second baseman to force out Degnan as Bailey scores tying the game at four. Jurco takes second on a throwing error and Pichman is walked. Brown, who previously notched a walk-off game winning hit earlier in the season, battling a 2-2 count - rips the line drive over the shortstop scoring the hustling Jurco for the game winner.

Palm Harbor has a busy schedule next week as they travel Tues, March 15th to Countryside at 7:00 then they are back at home Thursday, March 17th vs Seminole at 4:00 pm. PHU hosts another home game Friday, March 18th vs Osceola. The following week, PHU also participates in the week-long Dunedin spring break tournament.
