Tryouts
TRYOUTS...........
TRYOUTS (VARSITY & JV) „³ Will begin MONDAY AUGUST 17th and will run DOUBLE SESSIONS through Wednesday the 19th. Athletes are expected to attend BOTH sessions each day for the 3 day tryout process
MONDAY AUGUST 17th: 9:00 am - Noon AND 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
TUESDAY AUGUST 18th: 9:00 am - Noon AND 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 19th: 9:00 am - Noon AND 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
LOCATION: PINKERTON ACADEMY HACKLER GYMNASIUM
IF YOU HAVE NOT YET TURNED IN THE ATHLETIC PAPERWORK NEEDED, PLEASE BRING IT WITH YOU TO TRYOUTS. ThIS SHOULD BE:
1. Physical form
2. Athletic permission form
3. Athletic contract
-- ANY OF THESE FORMS NEEDED CAN BE FOUND IN THE ATHLETIC OFFICE AT SCHOOL. SEE MRS. CORMIER. ANY ATHLETE HAVING NOT PARTICIPATED IN A SPORT FOR PINKERTON MUST HAVE A PHYSICAL PRIOR TO TRYOUTS. ALL PAPERWORK AND FORMS MUST BE TURNED IN ON DAY 1 OF TRYOUTS IN ORDER TO PARTICIPATE. You will not be able to tryout UNTIL all of these forms are turned in and approved by the Athletic Director.
WHO IS ELLIGIBLE: ANY CURRENT PA STUDENT (GRADE 9 - 12) WITH ACCEPTABLE GRADES PER PINKERTON STANDARDS. CHECK WITH YOUR GUIDANCE COUNSELOR IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS ON ELLIGIBILITY
WHAT TO WEAR:PINKERTON COLORS OR PA ATTIRE ONLY (for those of you who attended camp in the past...the tanks are completely acceptable!) AND ACCEPTABLE CHEER CLOTHING. HAIR MUST BE UP AND SECURED TIGHTLY WITH A BOW! HOW YOU LOOK WILL EFFECT OUR PERCEPTION AND FIRST IMPRESSIONS ARE LASTING....SO MAKE SURE TO PUT SOME EFFORT INTO YOUR APPEARANCE AND SHOW YOUR SCHOOL SPIRIT!
HOW TRYOUTS WILL RUN: YOU WILL BE GIVEN A NUMBER.....
During the course of the tryout process:
1. YOU WILL DEMONSTRATE YOUR HARDEST STANDING TUMBLING SKILL
(this can be anything from a forward roll to a standing tuck, layout, full etc) ** A STANDING TUCK IS A REQUIREMENT TO COMPETE for THE VARSITY TEAM !!
2. YOU WILL DEMONSTRATE YOUR HARDEST RUNNING TUMBLING SKILL
(this can be anything from a roundoff to a layout full thru to full etc.)
3. YOU WILL PERFORM A SIDELINES OF YOUR CHOICE & ONE THAT YOU WILL BE TAUGHT AT TRYOUTS
4. YOU WILL PERFORM 3 - 4 WHIP JUMPS OF YOUR CHOICE
5. YOU WILL BE ASKED TO DEMONSTRATE AN ADVANCED ONE LEGGED STUNT (either basing, backing or flying!) and you will need to demonstrate either a SINGLE twist or a DOUBLE DOWN dismount from that skill.
** Please Note: It is HIGHLY SUGGESTED that you are flexible in this area. JUST BECAUSE you have ONLY been a flyer - or a MAIN BASE, does not mean that we have a spot to fill in that area. Every tryout is different, with different people of all sizes, and shapes comprising the teams. We need to make OUR BEST judgement in placing people in certain roles as we make the choices that BEST SUIT THE TEAM(s). Those willing to try different roles, and those willing to be versatile and TRY more than their own area of expertise (with a positive attitude) will be considered first.
6. YOU WILL DO A STAMINA TEST -- TIMING, PRECISION, ACCURACY OF SKILLS and STAMINA, all taken into account.
(see skills listed below for what you should be working on...)
7. You will perform 6 eight counts of dance that WE teach you. You will NOT be asked to prepare your own material this season.
8. YOU WILL BE INTERVIEWED BY THE COACHING STAFF (we will ask an abundance of important questions...) and ASKED TO SHOW YOUR LAST REPORT CARD from the previous semester.
PLEASE NOTE....WE ARE ONLY HAVING ONE TRYOUT. FROM THIS TURNOUT THE COACHING STAFF WILL SELECT TWO TEAMS -- VARSITY AND JUNIOR VARSITY. THIS ALLOWS THE COACHES TO SELECT THE BEST FIT FOR EACH TEAM.
** NEW THIS YEAR -- Varsity will be making cuts after day 1. Making this first round of cuts will NOT ensure you a spot on the Varsity team. We are planning to narrow down the group in order to look more closely at potential athletes with the required skill level to make the Varsity team. We will be posting the FINAL LIST on the last day of tryouts.
THE NUMBERS AND CORRESPONDING TEAMS WILL BE POSTED ONLINE FOLLOWING THE FINAL EVENING OF TRYOUTS.
NO SPOTS ARE SOLIDFIED UNTIL THE POSTING FOLLOWING TRYOUTS. JUST BECAUSE YOU HAVE BEEN ON ONE OF THE TWO TEAMS IN THE PAST, WILL NOT EFFECT AT ALL IF and WHERE YOU ARE PLACED ON A TEAM. YOU EARN SPOTS ON YOUR OWN MERIT, WHAT YOU DISPLAY AT TRYOUTS, YOUR ATTITUDE, YOUR HEART AND DETERMINATION and YOUR ACADEMIC HISTORY. If you want a spot on a team -- work hard and earn one.

STAMINA TEST SAMPLE of SKILLS
Because cheering is SOOO much more competitive at the High School level now in the state of NH we have decided that it is crucial to see who does their workouts in the off season, who has REALLY put in the time, and who is REALLY in shape. :) This said....
YOU MIGHT be asked in an obstacle course or stamina course (or sorts) to show us:
CRUNCHES (a certain number within a time frame -- done with good form
V-UPS (same parameters)
PUSH UPS (same parameters)
JUMP ROPE (a certain time frame given to you...)
CHEER JACKS (a certain time frame given to you...)
SQUATS/LUNGES (a certain number given to you...)
LEAP FROGS (a certain time frame given to you...)
BEAR CRAWLS (a certain time frame given to you...)
GRAPEVINES (a certain time frame given to you...)
and of course....some RUNNING!

If you want to be "prepared" for tryouts...then push the envelope where these skills are concerned and you should be good to go to pass our test. :) you WILL be scored on how well you can get through the test, how in shape you are, how much your struggle, how much you are willing to push, and what you can't complete. This will be factored into your score.
