Catholic Spirit Article re: SJS Cheerleaders
Catholic Spirit Article, December 16, 2004 page 12

Members of the St. James School, Woodbridge, cheerleading squad recently used their considerable spirit to bring their "good news" outside a gymnasium.

The Varsity and Junior Varsity squads, under the direction of Varsity Head Coach Laura Haag and Junior Varsity Head Coach Shelley Murphy, entertained the residents at Stern Towers, a comlex for senior citizens in Woodbridge, Dec. 6.

Angelica Zimny, a Varsity Co-Captain, read the poem "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and all the girls san Christmas carols with their adoptive grandparents.

After the entertainment, the cheerleaders served candy, cookies and cakes and then took a few moments to sit and chat with their new friends.

The residents established wonderful memories at least until our next visit, Haag said. This is the second year the St. James cheerleaders have visited Stern Towers for the holiday season.

Haag,a member of St. James Parish, Woodbridge, continued another tradition with the Varsity cheerleaders this year. For the past five years, the group has participated in the St. James Church Giving Tree during Advent. The girls donate their allowance or do extra chores for money in order to buy a present for some child not as fortunate as they are, Haag said.

This year the goal was to raise $20.00 for an 8 year old girl who asked for some beads for her hair. The girls donated more than their goal, so they plan to buy extra gifts for the needy child, Haag said.

"I always try to teach the girls to reach out to the community," Haag said. "I try to instill in the girls to earn the money, and not to just ask their parents by doing chores - dishes, raking leaves or babysitting. We bring the 'jingle bell' can to practice and the girls bring in their donations. It's a great feeling to know that these young ladies helped to make Christmas a special one for an unfortunate child."
