Changes in Skyland Conference Football Schedule Coming
by Harry Frezza, Courier News (mycentraljersey.com blog post)
Athletic directors from the Skyland Conference will have their monthly meeting Wednesday morning in Raritan Township. Among the busiest topics will be the proposed football schedules for 2009.
The new Union County-Skyland Conference Superconference football schedule will be on the agenda and will bring LOTS of debate. Nick Serritella, the athletic director at Watchung Hills High School, has put together a model schedule that will include cross overs with the Skyland and former Watchung and Mountain Valley conferences.
As an example, Somerville has Hillside, Roselle and Rahway as its proposed Union County opponents; Bridgewater-Raritan may have Elizabeth, Westfield and Union. It's just a working model, so nothing is official and won't be tomorrow.
Remember, that the new football conference goes into action next September, so the athletic directors/football coaches better be ready to compromise soon.
I can tell you that a casualty to this will be the Somerville-Immaculata game, which just had rebirth in 2004. Just a hunch or is it much more than a hunch? The game is doomed. Just one man's opinion.
The Skyland Conference has also developed an all-sports schedule that includes 2009-10 newcomers Pingry and Gill St. Bernards. That still needs to be approved.
