Daniel Bibona 06' Named Collegiate First-Team All-American
IRVINE, Calif. --- Pitcher Daniel Bibona (Lake Forest/Santa Margarita HS) has been named a Collegiate Baseball "Louisville Slugger" first-team All-American and is one of six conference Pitchers of the Year to be honored on the first team.
Bibona, who was tabbed a third-team preseason All-American by the Tucson publication, becomes the fourth Anteater to receive first-team honors and second consecutive, following 2008 honoree Scott Gorgen.
Bibona, a 6-0 southpaw, posted an 11-1 record in the regular season and went undefeated in conference play at 7-0, leading UC Irvine to its first-ever Big West crown. Bibona is fifth in the nation in wins and 23rd in ERA at 2.65. His 94 strikeouts lead the conference and he helped the Anteaters win the title outright after throwing his first career complete game against UC Davis. Bibona is currently eight in the school's career records with 21 wins and he tied for 10th in single-season victories.
Top-ranked UC Irvine, the No. 6 national seed, hosts the Irvine Regional this weekend (May 29-June 1) at Anteater Ballpark and faces Fresno State Friday at 8:00 p.m. No. 7 Virginia takes on San Diego State at 4:00 p.m.
