RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Bombers wrapped up their week with a series sweep over the Riverside Bulldogs with a 17-13 win on Saturday. The team scored a total of 59 in five games, going a perfect 5-0 to improve to a 13-7 record overall.
A four-run inning is what got things started for the Bombers in the top of the first. Jerron Largusa led off with a ground-rule double to left and came around to score on an error that allowed Chris Sandberg to reach third. Aaron Meers drew a walk to put two runners on before Joey Magro brought both in with a three-run home run to left, his second big fly of the season.
The Bulldogs were able to scratch one run across in the bottom of the first, but Logan Grigsby shut them down the next two innings.
Meers got the offense going in the top of the third by legging out an infield single. He then stole second and third and then scored on an error by the catcher. Magro drew a walk next and was knocked in by a single from Daniel Moriel.
The scoring continued in the top of the fourth as Ryon Knowles sent a flare into right for a single. Sandberg came to the plate next and sent a ball over the fence in center for his second home run in as many games. His two-run shot put the Bombers up 8-1.
The Bulldogs chipped away at the lead, adding one more in the bottom of the fourth before Grigsby struck out two to end the inning.
Reed drove in Eric Mendez with an RBI single in the top of the fifth, and Largusa followed up with an RBI single of his own. Back-to-back RBI doubles from Knowles and Sandberg further extended the lead for the Bombers.
The top of the sixth followed the same pattern as Moriel and Reed both reached on base hits. A sacrifice fly from Largusa brought Moriel in before Knowles knocked in Reed with a single. Three-straight RBI doubles from Sandberg, Conner Shepherd and Meers brought in three more as the Bombers took a commanding 17-4 lead.
The Bulldogs tried to mount a comeback in the last few innings but the Bombers were able to hang on to win 17-13.
Sandberg had another big day at the plate, going 4-6 with two doubles, a triple and a home run. He also added four RBI.
The Bombers take the holiday weekend off to rest up for the challenging week ahead. They jump right back in to SCCBL play as they head to Pasadena for their final game with the Arroyo Seco Sentinels on Wednesday afternoon.
