    Cardinals Clinch League Championship!
The Cubs only trailed 2-0 after 2 innings, but the Cardinals finally shook off the rust from a nine day layoff and won 9-0 for their 5th shutout in a row. Brandon Schmidt (7-0) pitched brilliantly, striking out 13 and one-hitting the Cubs to get the win in his 4th complete game of the season. In the 3rd inning, Schmidt struck out the side. The Cardinals had several outstanding defensive plays in the game. With one out in the first inning, center fielder Dale Abraham made a perfect throw from the fence to shortstop Donovan Mills, who tagged out the Cubs' Chris who was trying to stretch a single into a double. Zach Mitchell made a nice play in the second inning on a grounder down the first base line to retire the Cubs' Blake. Then in the 5th with no outs, Mitchell dug out a low throw at first to just get the out on Blake again. In the 6th inning, second baseman Jordan Deaton made a fine stop on a grounder in the hole behind first and made the out at first on the Cubs' Chris. Offensively, the Cardinals were led by Brandon Schmidt, who went 3 for 3 with a single and two doubles, and had 3 RBIs. Ian Mayfield also had 3 RBIs, with a double and a triple. Dale Abraham was the stolen base leader with 7 in the game. Cardinals outfielder Josh Sunwall injured his arm or shoulder and left the game in the 3rd inning to receive medical attention. With the playoffs one week away, the Cardinals can't afford to lose Sunwall and are hoping for good news on his diagnosis. With one regular season game left tomorrow against the Bulldogs, the Cardinals are 16-0 and clinched the league championship with the win.
