Cardinals Open District Play with Win Over Red Sox
After earning a bye in the first round of District play, the Cardinals defeated the Red Sox 12-2 on Saturday in their first game. The Cardinals scored 9 in the first inning and coasted the rest of the way to the victory. The Red Sox, who had defeated the Lions in the first round, will face the Robinson in an elimination game tonight at 8:00. The Cardinal bats were on fire as they opened the game with 7 consecutive hits. Brandon Schmidt had a double and two singles on 3 for 3 hitting to lead the Cardinals. Jordan Deaton and Dale Abraham had a game high 2 RBIs each. Donovan Mills led the team with three stolen bases and scored 3 runs. Brandon Schmidt pitched 4 innings to get the win and Donovan Mills went the final inning to get the save. Defensively, the Cardinals made several outstanding plays. In the first inning, shortstop Donovan Mills made a nice stop on a hard bouncer to retire the Red Sox' Michael Haun for the second out. In the 2nd inning, second baseman Jordan Deaton made a double play when he picked up a grounder, tagged the runner, and threw to Zach Mitchell at first to retire Red Sox hitter J.D. Campbell. With 2 out in the 5th, third baseman Alex Mitchell snagged a grounder and threw out Sox pinch hitter Chris Gall to retire the side. At 6:00 on Monday, the Cardinals will face the winner of the 2:00 pm game today between the Mudhens and Cubs in the finals of the winner's bracket.
